Why the Avalanche re-signed Anton Lindholm to a two-year contract

As Joe Sakic said last summer, “You can’t have too much D.”

So, while it might have been something of a head-scratcher to see today that the Avalanche re-signed Swedish defenseman Anton Lindholm to a two-year contract, the response to that is…you can’t have too much D.

Anton Lindholm played just two games with the Avs last season, and in the three years he’s been with the organ-i-zation, he’s played a total of 62 games, with no goals, four assists and a minus-5. He wouldn’t seem to figure into the team’s plans for the coming season, at least on the depth chart as of right now, so why re-sign him?
