Cale Makar, NHL rookie of the month for November. Nathan MacKinnon, one of the NHL’s Three Stars for the month (No. 2 star) of November.

Sunday was an off day for the M&M boys, along with the rest of the Avalanche. But it was a day of tribute for them.

First, the tribute to Makar. From the NHL’s official release:

Coloradoย Avalancheย defensemanย Cale Makar, who led all rookies in goals (7), points (16), game-winning goals (3), plus/minus (+10) and average time on ice (21:25) in 14 contests, has been named the NHLโ€™s โ€œRookie of the Monthโ€ for November.

Makar edged New York Rangers defensemanย Adam Foxย (4-8โ€”12 in 15 GP), Vancouver Canucks defensemanย Quinn Hughesย (1-11โ€”12 in 14 GP), Carolina Hurricanes centerย Martin Necasย (4-6โ€”10 in 14 GP), Buffalo Sabres right wingย Victor Olofssonย (4-6โ€”10 in 14 GP) and Pittsburgh Penguins defensemanย John Marinoย (2-8โ€”10 in 14 GP) for the honor.

Makar became the fifth rookie defenseman in NHL history to record seven or more goals within a single calendar month โ€“ and the first sinceย Brian Leetchย in January 1989 (7-9โ€”16 in 13ย GP w/ NYR). Makar also became the first rookie blueliner with 16-plus points in one calendar month sinceย Alexei Zhitnikย in March 1993 (5-14โ€”19 in 14 GP).

Meanwhile, Makarโ€™s three game-winning goals โ€“ registered Nov. 9 vs. CBJ, Nov. 12 at WPG and Nov. 29 at CHI โ€“ were the most by any rookie defenseman within a single calendar month in NHL history.

The 21-year-old Calgary native โ€“ who made his League debut during the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs withย the winning goal against his hometown Flamesย โ€“ tops rookies with 8-18โ€”26 through 26 total outings this season. Makarโ€™s 26 points are the fourth-most by any NHL defenseman through his first 26 career regular-season games, behind onlyย Harry Cameronย (22โ€‘14โ€”36 from 1917-19 w/ TAN),ย Larry Murphyย (5-24โ€”29 in 1980-81 w/ LAK) andย Hap Dayย (10-17โ€”27 in 1924-25 w/ TSP).

Makar, the fourth overall selection in the 2017 NHL Draft, joins Olofsson (October) as a โ€œRookie of the Monthโ€ winner in 2019-20.

Now, MacKinnon’s tribute. From the league’s release:

FIRST STAR โ€“ CONNOR McDAVID, C, EDMONTONย OILERS

McDavid topped the NHL in goals (13), points (26), power-play goals (6) and power-play points (11) across 14 contests to power the Pacific Division-leadingย Oilersย (16-9-3, 35 points) to a 7-5-2 November. McDavid found the scoresheet in all but two of his appearances, highlighted by an 11-game point streak from Nov. 4-24 (12-12โ€”24). He registered multiple points seven times, including a hat trick Nov. 10 at ANA and a career-high six points Nov. 14 vs. COL (3-3โ€”6) โ€“ making him the first Edmonton player with as many points in a game since Feb. 2, 2012 (Sam Gagner: 4-4โ€”8 vs. CHI). McDavid also reached the 400-point benchmark Nov. 10 at ANA, becomingย the 13th-fastest player in League historyย to hit the milestone (306 GP). The 22-year-old Richmond Hill, Ont., native and two-time Art Ross Trophy winner paces the NHL with 49 points through 28 total outings this season. He also ranks among the top three in the League in power-play points (1st; 21), assists (2nd; 30), power-play assists (2nd; 13), goals (3rd; 19) and power-play goals (t-3rd; 8).

SECOND STAR โ€“ NATHAN MacKINNON, C, COLORADOย AVALANCHE

MacKinnon ranked second in the NHL with 10-15โ€”25 in 14 games to propel theย Avalancheย (16-8-2, 34 points) to an 8-6-0 November despite the team missing two of its top producers from last season (Mikko Rantanenย andย Gabriel Landeskog) for almost the entire month. MacKinnon collected points in 10 of his 14 contests, led by a trio of four-point outings: Nov.ย 7 vs. NSH (1-3โ€”4), Nov. 12 at WPG (2-2โ€”4) and Nov. 29 at CHI (1-3โ€”4). He also scored in eight different games, highlighted by his eighth career overtime goal Nov. 16 at VAN (2-1โ€”3). MacKinnon โ€“ who topped the League with 79 shots on goal in November โ€“ closed the month on a seven-game point streak, compiling 6-10โ€”16 during that stretch (Nov. 16-30). The 24-year-old Halifax, N.S., native sits fourth in the NHL with 17-25โ€”42 through 26 total appearances this season. His 25 November points were the most by anyย Avalancheย player in a single calendar month since March 2000 (Joe Sakic: 15-11โ€”26 in 13 GP).

THIRD STAR โ€“ PATRICK KANE, RW, CHICAGOย BLACKHAWKS

Kane found the scoresheet in all 15 of his November appearances, placing third in the League with 11-13โ€”24 to guide theย Blackhawksย (10-11-5, 25 points) to a 7-5-3 month. Kane scored in 10 different contests, highlighted by a six-game goal streak from Nov. 7-17 (7-8โ€”15) โ€“ the longest by any player this season. He also registered six multi-point performances, including three-point efforts Nov. 7 vs. VAN (1-2โ€”3), Nov. 10 vs. TOR (2-1โ€”3) and Nov. 13 at VGK (1-2โ€”3). The 31-year-old Buffalo native and 2015-16 Art Ross Trophy winner ranks eighth in the NHL with 14-19โ€”33 through 26 total outings this season. Kaneโ€™s current 15-game point streak is the longest of 2019-20 and the third-longest of his career, behind only a 26-game run in 2015-16 (16-24โ€”40) and a 20-game stretch in 2018-19 (17-26โ€”43).
