Some media people apparently forget to put “MD” next to their names, when discussing the health of Matt Calvert.

“He should just retire now, for his own good” goes one typical media refrain.

“Matt, for the good of your family, just call it quits,” goes one typical refrain, from a concerned citizen on Twitter.

The Avalanche veteran appreciates your concern. Yes, he’s had a history of concussions and that’s a serious thing. He knows that.

But in the case of Calvert’s latest injury, which was listed last week and was described as to the upper body, it wasn’t a concussion. That didn’t stop some from immediately jumping to the conclusion that it was, and prescribing an early retirement for the 31-year-old.

“It wasn’t the same injury. It was a completely different thing,” Calvert told Colorado Hockey Now. “I’ll tell you one thing: I think about my family and I think about my health first. And No. 2 in my life is the team.”
