Dater’s Daily: Vegas over the cap, cue Fleury rumors, Tom Wilson engaged

Well, happy Tuesday folks. Ready for another day of sweating it out, and I don’t just mean from the 100-degree Denver heat? Yeah, me too. One day before the start of NHL free agency, and, no, still no announcements from the Avalanche on any new signings of their own guys, and we all know who I’m talking about. Let’s do some links, thoughts, parceling of information:

  • If – IF – the Avs lose Gabe Landeskog and Philipp Grubauer, it’s time to start seriously thinking of who’d replace them. What about Marc-Andre Fleury in the case of Grubi? The Vegas Golden Knights are now over the cap and Robin Lehner is signed long-term. Fleury has one year left on a deal making $7 million. Would Vegas consider trading him to a conference rival? Here’s a little more on the situation with Vegas/Fleury (Vegas Hockey Now)
  • I think Fleury, the current Vezina winner (but who was benched in favor of Lehner in Vegas’ final game of the playoffs against Montreal, would be a GREAT addition not only to the Avs on the ice, but in the dressing room.
  • A lot of Avs fans have wondered: If we don’t sign Landy, what about giving Saad some of that money and just making him and Andre Burakovsky the top two left wings and going with that? I mean, it’s a theory all right and I’m not saying it can’t happen. I do know that there wasn’t much talk with the Saad camp originally, but agent Lewis Gross has put up a cone of silence lately when I’ve asked about his situation. Sometimes, that’s a good thing when agents don’t return my calls. In my experience, it means they are close to a deal and don’t want to tempt themselves saying anything to me about it. Then again, sometimes it means they’re sick of me.
  • If Landy goes, I think the Avs are going to put in a bid for forward Blake Coleman, who has won two straight Stanley Cups with Tampa Bay but the Lightning can’t afford to re-sign him.
  • Larry Brooks says the Rangers will sign Patrik Nemeth tomorrow (NY Post)
  • From Coleman to Tomas Tatar, there are several big names hitting the market on Wednesday. Adam Gretz shares his free agency power rankings. (Pro Hockey Talk)
  • Assuming the NHL players go to the Olympics in Beijing, Pittsburgh Penguins head coach and Boston native, Mike Sullivan will be the head coach for Team USA.
  • Washington: The Washington Capitals took a sure step towards the Alex Ovechkin contract, but it cost them solid defenseman, Brenden Dillon. The Capitals traded Dillon to Winnipeg for picks and a chunk of cap space.
  • PuckPedia: Here’s the full list of players who didn’t get their qualifying offers and are now free agents.

  • As far as my site goes this season. I won’t be in the building much at all. I got in trouble with the Avs for saying that swear word and will be doing some time in the penalty box.
  • Aww, Tom Wilson got engaged. Aren’t you happy for him? (Washington Hockey Now)
