Avs Grades in Win Over Blues

You don’t get out without singin’ the blues

Bowen Byram : B – He seemed to get better as the game went along like he was feeding off the energy.

Erik Johnson : A – I liked his play offensively and defensively. This was a really good bounce-back game for everyone as it ended the losing streak.

Devon Toews : A – Not saying he’s the missing link but…..he’s the missing link. I hope he feels rested because it’s go time.

Cale Makar : B- –  A quiet night compared to normal. 20 plus minutes played, plus two and three hits. Hope he can turn it around…kidding.

Andrew Cogliano : B- – Really impressive on the penalty kill again. He kept the pressure on and cleared the puck when needed.

Valeri Nichushkin : A+ – Best season of his career. Hopefully, it carries over into the postseason because he will be a difference-maker.

Nicolas Aube-Kubel : C+ –  He was tied for the team lead in hits (4) and played over 13 minutes. I’ll take it.

Alex Newhook : A – 20 apples for the season. He’s played well through the losing streak and it’s nice to see him rewarded. He also was 5-0 in the faceoff dot.

Logan O’Connor : C+ – Avs snap their streak and looked like their dominant selves. Everyone gets a good grade!

Nathan MacKinnon : B+ –  A plus three and an assist. He now has 88 points on the season, behind only Rantanen who has 91.

J.T. Compher : B+ –  He has himself a nice four-game point streak going right now. He was also a plus three tonight.

Josh Manson : A – He NEEDED this type of game. I loved his shot from the point and hopefully we see more of those shot selections come playoffs.

Darren Helm : C – Nothing crazy or impactful but hey! You win as a team and you lose as a team.

Sam Girard : B – Another defensemen who needed a strong performance. He had an assist and over 18 minutes played. Keep. It. Going.

Attruri Lehkonen : B+ – He is a prime example of hard work paying off. He hustles to the net and keeps the pressure on with every shift.

Nico Sturm : C – Struggled in the faceoff dot tonight going 2-4. He played a little under 10 minutes.

Nazem Kadri : B – It would be nice to see him catch fire again before the regular season ends. He’s not playing horrible but we are missing that energy. An empty-net goal is a good start.

Andre Burakovsky : C – He missed the net a few times tonight but also blocked three shots.

Darcy Kuemper: B- – It’s just been an odd couple of games. There has been a fluke/random/incredible play that has happened in almost all of them. Tonight, O’Reilly’s 2nd goal of the game had me fooled! What a play. At the end of the night he faced 31 shots and let three in. More importantly, he got the W in a third period that could have been a meltdown.

Not sure Manson deserves an A. He continues to be a turnover machine out there. He doesn’t play physical at all and keeps making poor decisions with the puck. Him and Girard are going to be a liability in the playoffs.

Cal G

I dunno. He did score a goal, which was nice to see.

Richard Trujillo

He scored kind of a soft goal but that doesn’t erase the rest of his night. He got most of his playing time in the 3rd period. It is no coincidence that the Avs worst period was the 3rd when him and Girard played a ton.

Karl Keen

I respectfully disagree. I thought it was his best game since his first game. He finished plus 1 which means he wasn’t on the ice for their goals

Richard Trujillo

Well, the advanced stats from last night tend to agree with what I saw last night. Manson may have scored but he was objectively awful last night.

He scored a goal last night, what did you do?

Donald Victory

Fluke. Not his job. If he was -3 is that an offset?

Cal G

Newhook did beat O’really on a very important one and the ESPN kids made note of it. Imagine if the Avs actually started winning faceoffs. It makes all the difference, especially when you are protecting a lead. Loved Kadri’s empty netter. All in all, Avs did a good job turning the switch back to the on position.

Aaron Rud

Boy, it’s hard listening to ESPN.

John Klingenstein

That crew was terrible

Ryan Krueger

I think AJ is good but the others ugh!

Karl Keen

Completely agree.

That was an excellent game. Nice to see the boys back in the left lane with feet on the gas.

Even better than this game… Dallas all but dashed any chance for the Vegas Golden Goofs to get into the playoffs. I fucking love it. I drank a toast to schadenfreude last night.

Donald Victory

The near collapse was not so good. Goal two was lucky, but MacHS let ROR skate in off the side boards without a care in the world. Goal three. Preventing a goal is just as good as happysticking one.

It was great to see the Avs on TV. Thanks ESPN, but I agree about the announcers. What was there grade Kelsey? The Avs energy was what was most important last night. They played like they are capable of. Even without Landeskog and Rantanen, they beat the hottest team in the league. With Rantanens return tomorrow, that should move Nichushkin back to the 2nd line and Kadri will have his complete line to work with. Until Landeskog returns, my guess is Lehkonen will stay on the 1st line. Will Aube-Kubel stay on the 3rd line tomorrow? The 4th line looked… Read more »

There or their? Latter man…

Thank you for pointing that out. Since I do not have an edit prompt, I was unable to fix it after I wrote it. 🙂

Maybe we should start adding Bednar’s grade? C- for the near meltdown and seeming recurring issues the team has yet to solve.

Karl Keen

Kelsey, you should add a coach’s grade. D for Bednar. I am not a Bednar hater, but why do we have Mac out there at the end of games? Behind only Burky, he is terrible at playing defense. O’Reilly running circles around him all night. Add in that Mac, Compher, and Helms continue to take faceoffs when the players we traded for are much better at it. It makes no sense. I understand they pulled the goalie with 3:30 to play and Mac has to take shifts but Sturm, Cogliano, and Lehkonen should have been taking the bulk of the… Read more »

Ryan Krueger

I think they leave Mac, Rantanen and the top line when the other team pulls their goalie because they are most likely to pick off an errant pass and score an empty netter

Kuemper was AWESOME last night blocking shots, so how does he Ever get such a low score when we WIN, give him garbage grades when we lose! Either that or whoever wrote these grades needs to get in front of the goal and try and block the pucks!
Go Kuemper!!! 🏒❤🤘
