The Best Sources for NHL Betting

NHL betting markets are plentiful, including puck lines, moneyline, totals, game props, and player props, with each team playing 82 games each season.

In this comprehensive article of the different betting types in the NHL get familiar with the basics of NHL betting, and learn all the betting types that can increase your chances of winning.

Moneyline Bets

In any sport, the moneyline bet is the most popular. A simple bet on who will win an upcoming game. The number of goals scored, or whether the game goes into overtime does not determine the outcome of the bet. Your only requirement to win a hockey moneyline bet is that the team you selected wins.

Puck Line Bets

Spread bets are common in most major sports. A puck line bet is the closest thing to a spread bet in hockey. Essentially, it’s a spread bet, but with a few differences.

A puck line bet places one team as a favorite and the other as an underdog. The system then “spots” goals for the underdog (1 1/2) and takes away those goals from the favorite to try and balance the playing field. In other words, the favorite now needs to win by more goals to win this bet, and the underdog can actually lose if they keep it close, and you still win. This is the same concept as spread bets, except that the spread is always 1 1/2 goals instead of changing.

Totals Bets

In the totals bet, you bet on the total number of goals both teams will score in a game. The sportsbook will make a prediction of how many goals are going to be scored, and you will have to pick if the total is over or under.

It is usual for hockey totals to be 5 1/2 goals, 6 goals, or 6 1/2 goals. The standard is usually between those three numbers, though you may occasionally see higher or lower numbers. It doesn’t matter which team scores or wins. You only need to make sure the final score for both teams is either over or under the number you bet.

Prop Bets

Almost every potential bettor can place a prop bet on the NHL, making it one of the best ways to bet on the league. Rather than focusing on the outcome of an NHL matchup, prop betting takes into account events taking place during the game. Player props are the most popular NHL props. Bets are placed on individual players, and they can come from either team. In contrast to a player prop bet, a team props bet focuses on how a team performs as a whole. As NHL team prop betting is relatively new, there aren’t a lot of options for it, as there are for NHL player props.
