Dater: Five Avalanche Questions, Five Attempted Answers (+)
Call this “A Mailbag to Myself.” Questions I have to myself about the coming Avalanche season, and my best-attempted answers to myself. Sometimes we all talk to ourselves, right? Right?
1. Alexandar Georgiev? Should we worry about him?
Of course! You always worry about a young, unproven goaltender. Georgie had some rough moments in the preseason, but here’s why I’m really not too worried about him: that bad performance in Vegas was a game with few veterans in the lineup. The excellent result the other night against Dallas was with the six best defensemen on the team in front of him.
He still faced a lot of shots, though, and had to make a lot of tough saves. He made them. He looked very quick, side-to-side. He looks quicker than Darcy Kuemper did in his one year here. That’s not to dump on Darcy at all. He won a Stanley Cup. He was/is an excellent guy. But we were always a little worried about him last year, yeah? Yet, he’s going to have a Stanley Cup ring, forever.
That same defense that played in front of him is back, this time in front of Georgiev. That’s why I’m not too worried about him. You don’t need to be the second coming of Georges Vezina to win here.
