Dater’s Daily: Leftover Avalanche Thoughts From NY Trip; Tyson Jost Benched By Wild

Tyson Jost

As I wait for my son to pick me up from DIA, following a no-sleep night and 6:30 a.m. JetBlue flight from New York to Denver, I sit here feeling very tired but grateful. Grateful to be home, grateful that the kid got his butt out of bed and grateful for this ice cold diet coke and Denver omelette to eat while I wait. The flight got in really early, so there’s some time to kill. Let’s do some hockey notes, starting with a couple leftover Avalanche thoughts from the 1-2-0 road trip:

  • The Avalanche always said other teams would give them their best game, being champions and all. That’s happened some this year. But the Avalanche have uncharacteristically given some leads away this season, with last night’s against the Islanders Exhibit A.
  • I’m not worried, as the cavalry will come at some point. Nichushkin, Helm and, later, Landeskog.
  • The Sam Girard-Bo Byram experiment pairing last night didn’t work. They were a combined minus-6.
  • Looking around the league…
  • Tyson Jost was benched by the Minnesota Wild recently (Hockey Wilderness)
  • In six games with the Wild, Jost has one point (an assist, against the Avalanche) and a minus-5. Jost hasn’t played a game since Oct. 25, in fact.
  • Dallas Hockey Now: The Dallas Stars lose their starting goalie in Jake Oettinger. He has been one of the best goalies in the league so far.
  • Montreal Hockey Now: The Habs may have a new top line in Suzuki and Caufield performing.
  • Boston Hockey Now: David Pastrnak and the Bruins may be far apart on his contract.
  • Philly Hockey Now: Sean Couturier will undergo another back surgery and be out for 3-4 months. That’s a killer loss for the Flyers.
  • Calgary Hockey Now: The Flames have been working hard to make changes.
  • TSN: Former Avalanche goaltender Devan Dubnyk hangs them up and calls it a career. Adieu, Doob.
