Over the last year, NHL fans have gotten to experience more and go behind the scenes through the league’s partnership with TikTok, one of the fastest-growing social media platforms in the world. The league boasts two million followers on the app and has worked on producing content with many TikTok personalities, including TheHockeyGuys.

However, TikTok is not the only social media platform the NHL is dominating. The league and the teams in it are just as popular on Twitter. As of October 2022, the NHL league account has around 6.7 million followers on Twitter, but which individual teams are succeeding the most on this platform?

NHL Teams Dominating Twitter

Chicago Blackhawks

Consuming sports has changed drastically because of technological advancements. For example, ExpressVPN’s article highlights the magnitude of the sports streaming industry and how sports fans in the United States can stream a wide range of sports online. This array of online sports also includes hockey, which is the number one most streamed sport in Minnesota. But, we’re also consuming sport through social media, and no team in the NHL understands this more than the Chicago Blackhawks.

With 2.4 million Twitter followers, the Western Conference Central Division team posts a range of content on the platform, including real-time updates during games, graphics, and highlight reels. Tommy Hawk, the Blackhawks’ mascot, also has an active Twitter account. He has more than 14,000 followers on the platform.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the most active NHL teams on social media. Toronto’s management recently announced they expanded their partnership with TikTok, and this expansion will give fans more chances to win prizes through digital activations during the 2022-23 NHL season. The Maple Leafs are also popular on Twitter, where they have 2 million followers. Like the Blackhawks, the Maple Leafs regularly post real-time game updates and video highlight reels of goals and player skills.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Coming in third is the Pittsburgh Penguins. As of October 2022, the Penguins have 1.8 million followers on Twitter. The team posts game photos and highlight reel videos. They also publish post-match interviews with Coach Sullivan. Additionally, the Penguins regularly tweet graphics containing match stats, which gives fans more insight into the technical aspects of the game.

Philadelphia Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers also have a strong presence on Twitter. They have 1.5 million followers and post graphics and real-time updates. The Flyers also use this account to interact with other Philadelphia-based teams, such as the Philadelphia Union, who compete in the MLS. This communication between different professional sports teams in Philadelphia helps create a sense of community within the city’s sports culture.

Having a social media presence is a big part of the NHL’s digital marketing strategy. It can foster communities, allow fans to get closer to the action, and generate revenue for the organizations. While teams in the NHL have embraced new platforms like TikTok, their presence still dominates on Twitter.
