Dater’s Daily: Kane and Toews Starting To Ponder Moving On? NHL News And Notes

Patrick Kane nhl trade tracker

A good Thursday to all. Sunny, but cold here in the Mile High City today. Brennan and I will be at practice today, and then I’m going to sit down to be interviewed for another documentary about something from the Avalanche past. I can’t say what the subject matter is yet, but I think it’ll be a fun one to watch. On to some NHL news, notes and links, including an interesting story about Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews:

  • The trade speculation about the two Chicago Blackhawks’ aging stars (I say “aging” with respect) is, in my opinion anyway, going to be nonstop from pretty much now until March 3, the NHL trade deadline. That’s still a long ways away. But the fact is, the Blackhawks have two guys in their 30s on the last year of their contracts, with $10.5 million cap hits. The Blackhawks have won half as many games as they’ve lost. They need to do something. Toews and Kane would each bring building blocks as part of a solid rebuild. But will they waive their no-move clauses to make that happen? Respected Hawks reporter Scott Powers has a good take on the situation.
  • I won’t change my opinion on this: I think the Avalanche should try to get one or BOTH players. Yes, I know it might be “too much” to rent either player. That’s what they said when the Avalanche got Ray Bourque and Rob Blake too.
  • Tage Thompson, whom the Blues traded to Buffalo as part of the Ryan O’Reilly deal, went OFF last night. He’s turning into a legit star, while the Blues fade. (Buffalo News)
  • Great news about Kris Letang, who suffered a stroke only 10 days ago (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)
  • Anyone want Brock Boeser? (TSN)
  • Jesse Puljujarvi is pretty down on himself in Edmonton (Sportsnet)
  • A Flyer was mad last night about Alex Ovechkin’s empty-netter in a Caps win. Ovie responded (Washington Hockey Now)
  • Panthers star Sasha Barkov revealed he had a bout with pneumonia (Florida Hockey Now)
