Avalanche Turning Point: Georgiev Reads the Sharks Like a Book (+)

Avalanche Georgiev

In the Turning Point, we’ll take a look at one moment in the previous Colorado Avalanche game that changed the momentum of the game.

Things started to fall apart for the Avalanche a bit in the third period, and it carried into overtime. After playing well for two periods, they gave the Sharks some life. And in overtime, the Sharks had a glorious chance to win.

It was Georgiev vs. Jacob MacDonald and Kevin Labanc with the game on the line, and the Avalanche goaltender was up for the challenge.

Georgiev Reads It Perfectly

Typically, it’s a longer clip in the turning point. There’s no need for that here. The Avalanche don’t win the game if Georgiev doesn’t make the save.

It’s really just a display of intelligence and quickness by the Avalanche goaltender. The Sharks do make it a little easier on him, because MacDonald telegraphs the pass back to Labanc right away. He doesn’t even really look at Georgiev to make it seem like he’s going to shoot. Georgiev reads it perfectly. The power and push off his right skate is something, and allows him to get back over to Labanc. He also does a great job of making himself bigger. Earlier in the game on the game-tying goal by Labanc, he made himself small by staying low on the ice. That wasn’t the case here.

A loss to the Sharks would have been a tough one to swallow, and things were spiraling a bit in the third and overtime. Georgiev’s save kept the Avalanche in the game, allowing Nathan MacKinnon to be the hero moments later.
