Patrick Roy Puts On The Pads Again…Kind Of

I believe the last time Patrick Roy put on goalie pads might have been the Alumni Game back in 2016 prior to the Stadium Series. Coaching the Avalanche at the time, he had to train for a few weeks to get back into the rhythm of playing net, even if it was a pretty meaningless game. On Father’s Day, he put the pads on again, although they looked slightly different.
In a video posted on social media, Patrick Roy is seen putting on goalie pads for street hockey to play with some younger kids, who start questioning him about a few things.

The original video was posted on Instagram by Jana Roy, so these are Roy’s grandchildren. You have to love that the kids ask Roy if he’s better than Kelly Hrudey, and the former Avalanche netminder doesn’t even hesitate to say that yes, he absolutely is. Then Roy has to ask them, “who told you I was good?”
Don’t worry, they’ll find out soon enough just how good he was.
Roy became the head coach of the New York Islanders earlier this year and helped get them back into the playoffs, although it wasn’t exactly pretty getting there. Unlike his time with the Avalanche, Roy is focused only on coaching while he’s on Long Island, and has no interest in the management side of things. Lou Lamoriello runs the show there, although it might be time for him to call it quits here real soon.
At least we now know that Roy is allowed to grow a beard in the off-season, even if he can’t have one while the NHL season is going on.
