Evan’s NHL Daily: Mandolese Signs, Avalanche Killer Stepping Away

We all knew it was coming based off what was said when the season ended for the Dallas Stars, but on Tuesday, Joe Pavelski reiterated it – he’s ready to step away from the NHL. If this really is the end of the line for him, he’ll leave with 23 goals and 48 points in 57 career games against the Avalanche, which seems…low?

Just a few days after acquiring his rights, the Avalanche signed Kevin Mandolese to a one-year deal. The money he got is not exactly third goaltender money, though.

After a relatively quiet off-season, it’s time to take a look at the current state of the Avalanche.

He missed out on the opportunity last year, but it looks like Calum Ritchie has a good shot at making Team Canada this winter, assuming he’s not established himself in the NHL.

Mandolese Signs

Kevin Mandolese has a few NHL games under his belt, but the contract he signed on Tuesday doesn’t look like the contract you’d expect for a third goaltender in the organization.

Right now, it’s Mandolese and Trent Miner as Colorado’s depth goaltenders in the organization, and like I said on Monday, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Avalanche looked to add another goaltender before the season starts.

News And Rumors

Sportsnet: He doesn’t want to use the word “retire,” but it sounds like this is the end for Joe Pavelski. 476 goals and 1,068 points for someone drafted in the ninth round (which isn’t even a thing anymore) isn’t bad at all.

Steven Stamkos has scored a lot of goals in the NHL, but if you ask him about one, he just might remember all the details. Check out the memory the new Predators forward has.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Maybe this is something we should do here at CHN – what do the rivals in the Metro think of the Pittsburgh Penguins?

San Jose Hockey Now: Before he retired, the Sharks made one last pitch to try and lure Pavelski back.

Detroit Hockey Now: The Red Wings still like to make prospects marinate in the AHL before graduating them to the NHL full-time. Maybe this is the year for Simon Edvinsson.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Very few teams made more moves this summer than the New Jersey Devils. How does their lineup look heading into next season?
