Evan’s NHL Daily: 29 Is 29, Jarvis’ Interesting New Contract
It feels like just yesterday that the Avalanche took Nathan MacKinnon with the 1st overall pick in the NHL Draft. Well, it wasn’t yesterday, because last year’s Hart Trophy winner turned 29 years old on Sunday, making all of us who have followed his entire career feel a little bit older. Time sure does fly.
Seth Jarvis was one of the better restricted free agents left on the market, but that’s no longer the case, as he and the Hurricanes came to an agreement on a new contract over the weekend. The terms of the contract are fascinating, as it may open the eyes of the teams around the NHL looking for a way to keep cap hits a little lower moving forward.
Colorado Hockey Now
No matter what happens this season, is this the last year we see Alexandar Georgiev on the Avalanche?
His KHL season starts tomorrow, and there’s a lot of excitement around Ilya Nabokov. One KHL star compared his mental game to his former teammate, who has since become one of the best goalies in the NHL.
MacKinnon Is 29
Where does the time go? #29 is now 29 years old.
On Sunday, Nathan MacKinnon celebrated the earth taking another trip around the sun with him on it, and it’s kind of hard to believe he’s been in the NHL for well over a decade now. What are some of your favorite moments from his career? Here’s every goal he scored last season, as well as some of the best from his entire career.
News And Rumors
Daily Faceoff: Will other teams be following what the Hurricanes just did? Seth Jarvis signed an eight year, $63.2 million extension over the weekend, but it’s not your normal contract. His cap hit will actually be lower than the annual AAV because some of the money on the deal is being deferred until the year after the contract expires. This has been allowed under the CBA of the NHL for a long time, but teams don’t really use it, probably because players aren’t all that interested in it.
The amounts deferred for Seth Jarvis #canes:
-Year 1 $4.95M Signing Bonus
-Year 2 $4.95M Signing Bonus
-Year 7 $5.77M Signing BonusThis total of $15.67M is deferred until July 1, 2032

I don’t expect this to be a frequent occurrence in the NHL, but I guess we’ll wait and see. Most players are going to want their money during their contract and won’t want to wait until it’s done to receive it. A guy like Jarvis likely has one more big contract under his belt after this deal is done, so maybe it makes a bit more sense for him to accept a deal like this, but I’d be surprised if someone like a Mikko Rantanen or Leon Draisaitl had interest in this.
Smart thinking by the Hurricanes, though. If it’s allowed under the CBA, might as well use it.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Four Penguins who could have career seasons.
Boston Hockey Now: I didn’t think he was a fit for the Avalanche, but it looks like the Bruins will bring Tyler Johnson in for training camp.
Philly Hockey Now: Nick Robertson wants to be traded, but it hasn’t happened yet. Why the Philadelphia Flyers should be calling.
New Jersey Hockey Now: A less than ideal situation for any team right now – a player getting injured right before camp is supposed to begin. That’s the case for the Devils and Simon Nemec.
