Avalanche Cut Oskar Olausson, 4 Others on Sunday

Published

on

Oskar Olausson, the Avalanche’s 2021 first-round draft pick, was among five roster cuts following Sunday’s 6-3 loss to Utah Hockey Club.

Olausson dressed in each of the first two preseason games, finishing with one assist and four shots while averaging 15:09 in ice time.

This was perhaps his best chance to crack the roster given some of the names the team will start the season without. But the 21-year-old struggled to stick out and has seemingly been passed up by both 19-year-old Calum Ritchie and 24-year-old Nikolai Kovalenko.

Olausson had a good season with the Colorado Eagles in the AHL last year, scoring 11 goals and adding nine assists in 39 games. But he only got into one game with the Avs.

It’s no saying where his career goes from here, but it’s safe to say that he let a good opportunity slip. Olausson will join the Eagles training camp.

Other Roster Cuts:

D, Jacob MacDonald (on waivers)
LW, Chase Bradley
LW, Tye Felhaber
LW, Nikita Prishchepov

OO is a bust, time to swap him with someone else’s bust. Kaut for Mercer, which ended up as a bust for both teams anyway! Maybe this time we can get a draft pick instead.

Larry Macdonald

I thought Macdonald was signed to a 2 way contract?

Sounds like they might as well trade olausson.

Jeremy

I agree. A change of scenery is all that’s left to do. He has little to no value, so you take what you can get. Or as Ken said swap him with another teams disappointment.

Being brutally honest though, I see an NHL player in some of the raw skills alone. Everything else screams guy who belongs in Europe.

MacDonald did sign a Two-Way Contract. Many fans are confused about them due to the EA NHL games. A Two-Way Contract means that the player earns a lower amount if he plays in the AHL compared to when he’s in the NHL. Players have to clear waivers based on their age and/or amount of NHL games they’ve played.

Never liked the OO pick from day 1. Would have been nice to have grabbed Logan Stankoven, but so it goes.

Look at our 2014 draft if you want to see missed opportunities. 😉 Could have taken both Pastrnak and Shesterkin, but didn’t.

It’s always interesting to me that the answer to a player not working out is “trade him”, as if there’s a market for them. Teams typically swap busts because unless another team saw something in the player during their draft year, and think they can work magic, it would be GM malpractice to give up draft capital for a player that never improved on the flaw that was apparent during his draft year. He’ll be a key player for the Eagles this year and if he can’t be moved OO will go play in Europe when his contract is done

Jon

Prishchepov’s development will be interesting to watch. I think he made a positive impression on coaches

Joe Cerwinske

Where will Prishchepov play this year? I believe he’s an overage player on a junior team, which wouldn’t do him much good at this point, so will he have a chance to join the Eagles or Grizzlies? I think he showed enough positives from the rookie camp and tournament through his last preseason game that he should have earned an AHL/USHL contract. He’d be a great story as a hard-working 7th rounder who earns his spot.

Jon

The Ivan Ivan path 🤞

Joe Cerwinske

That’s great to hear! And he would be another feather in the cap for the team’s scouting department!
