Deen’s Daily: Drama Brewing in Boston with Jeremy Swayman

Published

on

The Jeremy Swayman saga reached new levels of drama on Monday.

During a press conference at TD Gardens, Boston Bruins President Cam Neely insinuated that the Bruins had offered the 25-year-old goaltender a max-term contract with an average annual value of $8 million.

“I don’t want to get into the weeds with what his ask is,” Neely said. “But I know that I have 64 million reasons why I’d be playing right now.”

The comment was just the latest in a long list of drama that has unfolded between Boston management and the restricted free agent, who became the undisputed No.1 goalie in the organization following the trade of Linus Ullmark to Ottawa.

But things didn’t stop there. Swayman’s agent answered back with a statement of his own, saying that this was the first time he had heard the number 64 million as part of the negotiations.

The ending of his statement is perhaps the most telling.

“We are extremely disappointed. This was not fair to Jeremy,” Gross said. “We will take a few days to discuss where we go from here.”

It’s not every day you see negotiations publicly get this heated. This is a clear sign that Bruins management is attempting to turn the heat back toward Swayman’s camp. As it stands right now, the majority of Bruins fans are siding with Swayman.

But did Boston go too far? What did Gross mean when he ended his statement the way he did? Is he looking to continue negotiations or attempt to force his client’s way out of Boston? There’s a lot to unfold here.

The Avs had another off day on Monday ahead of their final home preseason game on Tuesday against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Following Sunday’s 6-3 loss to Utah Hockey Club, head coach Jared Bednar said the team might carry eight defensemen to start the season. This means all of Calvin de Haan, Sam Malinski, Erik Brannstrom and Oliver Kylington would be on the opening night roster.

But, barring injuries, only two of them would be able to get into game action. Through three preseason games, has Malinski already separated himself from the rest?

Montreal Hockey Now: I’m still absolutely gutted for Patrik Laine. The injury he suffered Saturday against Toronto will probably keep him out of the lineup for most, if not all of the season — albeit a timeline for his recovery has not yet been announced. Laine was seen in crutches during the Habs’ practice on Monday.

More on Laine, and how it affects the Canadiens depth chart.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Brodeur led the Devils to a preseason victory following a strong performance in goal on Monday.

No, not that one.

Vegas Hockey Now: Excited to see the continued growth of the National Hockey Now Network. Adam Bradford has joined the team as our Vegas Golden Knights beat writer.

I’m not siding with Swayman! I don’t think his resume deserves 8x$8M and his public comments were basically saying his feelings were hurt by the arbitration that he asked for. His agent has done this before

Jeremy

I agree. Hard to empathize with a guy who has 64 million presumably over 8 years just sitting there. Especially when you factor in he’s been part of a goalie tandem & was the backup two years ago to the guy who won the vezina. I will say the B’s front office dropped the ball in this respect. How do you deal Ullmark without knowing with pretty much 100% certainty what Swayman’s ask was going to be? If you knew he was going to want some absurd Boborovsky like contract. You could’ve dealt him for a nice haul & kept… Read more »

I’ve seen other Avs media speculate this summer that Colorado could be the beneficiary of the Swayman drama, and would make an offer to the Bruins for him. Have you heard anything about that, and what would it hypothetically take to get a deal done?
