Deen’s Daily: Celebrini Scores in Debut; Lightning Game Postponed; Trouble in Buffalo
Goaltending is all over the map in the NHL this fall. Not only have we already been treated to an entertaining albeit stressful standoff between the Boston Bruins and Jeremy Swayman, but we also have reports from NHL Insiders that Igor Shesterkin is looking to become the highest-paid NHL goalie in history. And he’s not just trying to pass Carey Price’s $10.5 million AAV by just a hair.
On the ice, Shesterkin is 1-0 with a shutout. Swayman didn’t look quite as strong, stopping just 20 of 24 shots in a 6-4 victory for Boston over the Montreal Canadiens, who came to TD Garden on the second leg of a back-to-back.
Swayman’s old running mate Linus Ullmark was excellent in his debut with the Ottawa Senators. The Swedish netminder signed a four-year extension worth the same $8.25 million AAV as Swayman earlier in the week and took that right into a strong performance, making 30 saves in a 3-1 triumph over the reigning Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers.
In Detroit, Ville Husso struggled while Darcy Kuemper had a great start to his second stint with the L.A. Kings.
We’re also still waiting to see how Stuart Skinner and Alexandar Georgiev respond for Edmonton and Colorado, respectively, in their next games. Neither looked all that great on Wednesday.
Around The NHL
Buffalo Hockey Now: Kuemper’s strong performance came against the Buffalo Sabres, who are already 0-3 to start the season. This was perhaps one of the few teams that needed to do everything in their power to have a strong start and it just hasn’t happened. You can read all about their latest loss here.
Macklin Celebrini: Throw the puck towards the goal and good things will happen. Celebrini scored in his NHL debut on Thursday off a deflection in front. He was attempting a pass but it ended up in the back of the net. Really fun to see all the young talent in San Jose this year. They might not win a lot of games but it’ll be entertaining hockey to watch.
Tampa Bay Lightning: The Lightning announced that their home opener Saturday against the Carolina Hurricanes will be postponed due to Hurricane Milton. While Amalie Arena did not suffer any damage from the storm, the team felt it made more sense to cancel the game, for now, while the community continues to recover from what has been a tough time in Florida. It was also nice to see Steven Stamkos send his best wishes to the community he called home for so long.
Tampa’s next home game is Tuesday.
