Deen’s Daily: Waiver Claim; Rookies Debut in Philly; 32 NHL Captains

It took one game for the Avalanche to reshuffle the deck. They aren’t necessarily huge moves (except for the injury), but in October, any changes are big, especially when you have to make a waiver claim for an important position after one game.

Colorado claimed goalie Kaapo Kahkonen off waivers from the Winnipeg Jets on Friday. The Finnish netminder is still dealing with visa issues and did not join the team for morning skate on Saturday. But, he’ll give the Avs another option in goal after a brutal goaltending performance on opening night in Vegas.

Starter Alexandar Georgiev let in five goals on 16 shots and backup Justus Annunen, who only played the third period, still had the game within reach before surrendering two goals on five shots. Not good.

Georgiev’s bounce-back opportunity against Columbus in the home opener will also come without a crucial piece upfront. Jonathan Drouin was injured in the opener and will miss at least the next two games. He was hunched over in the third period while skating off the ice. Head coach Jared Bednar said it was an upper-body injury.

Philly Hockey Now: The Flyers finally kicked off their season on Friday, answering back from a deficit twice to beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 in the shootout. While the Canucks have now suffered two losses in games they once led, the Flyers were excited to not only get a win but to do it with two exciting rookies in the lineup. Their last two first-round draft picks Matvei Michkov and Jett Luchanko got their first taste of NHL action.

NHL: No specific outlet covering this one, but following the announcement that Jordan Eberle will captain the Seattle Kraken, every single NHL team has a captain at the same time. This, surprisingly hasn’t happened since 2011.
