Deen’s Daily: Captain Crosby; Unbeatable Jets; Bobrovsky’s 400th win

The Avalanche extended their winning streak to four games on Thursday following a 5-1 triumph over Utah Hockey Club. In their first visit to Delta Center, Colorado scored the first four goals before giving up a late tally to Utah to end the shutout bid for Justus Annunen.

Colorado’s usual backup netminder has started each of the last three games and has allowed just four goals, helping head coach Jared Bednar’s club get back to .500 after starting the season 0-4-0.

Annunen was one of the positive highlights in a one-sided game for the Avs on the road.

Unfortunately for the Avs, they lost another big piece due to injury. Forward Ross Colton scored the opening goal for his seventh of the season before leaving the game with an upper-body injury.

There’s no saying if Colton’s injury is expected to keep him out. The Avs are off on Friday but will practice on Saturday before playing three home games in four nights starting on Sunday. I don’t expect that we’ll get an update on his status until media availability following practice at Family Sports.

Before the game vs. Utah, Colleen Flynn posted her take on what the Avs’ lines should look like when Jonathan Drouin returns — albeit there is no clear timetable on when he’s expected back just yet.

Around The NHL

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Connor McDavid met with media following the release of the 4 Nations Faceoffs Jerseys. When asked about potentially being the captain of Team Canada, McDavid quickly shot down the idea, calling Sidney Crosby the leader of the Canadian squad. Without a doubt, McDavid will carry the team internationally for the next decade. But 2025 — and potentially 2026 are still Crosby’s team.

The Penguins take on the Oilers on Friday.

Florida Hockey Now: The Panthers got back to their winning ways on Thursday, handing the New York Rangers their first regulation loss of the season. In the process, goalie Sergei Bobrovsky won his 400th game in a record-breaking 707 games, making him the quickest to reach the mark in NHL history. The previous record belonged to Rangers great Henrik Lundqvist (727). It’s only fitting that Bobrovsky was able to reach the mark at Madison Square Garden.

Winnipeg: The Jets won again on Thursday, defeating the Seattle Kraken 4-3 in OT to improve to 7-0-0 on the season. Scott Arniel’s club was often overlooked as a top team over the summer despite finishing last season with 110 points. Their poor playoff performance against the Avalanche in Round 1 didn’t help their cause in preseason predictions.

Detroit Hockey Now: Speaking of winning streaks. The Red Wings increased theirs to three games following a 5-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils. They were carried by a strong goaltending performance from Cam Talbot and a late game-winning goal from Patrick “Showtime” Kane.
