Cale Makar Nears Bobby Orr’s Season-Opening Record Point Streak

Published

Cale Makar extended his season-opening point streak with an assist on Ivan Ivan’s goal in the first period of the matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday night. Makar’s 18th point of the season put him in the No. 3 spot in the league.

The 26-year-old became the second defenseman in NHL history with the longest season-opening point streak โ€” behind Bobby Orr (15 GP in 1973-74). He is No. 3 for longest point streak in franchise history behind Matt Duchesne (15: Nov. 3 – 30, 1992) and himself with 13 (Feb. 18 – March 8, 2022).

The milestone came on Makar’s birthday โ€” the last Avs blue liner to notch a point on his special day wasย Sam Girard on May 12, 2021.

Nathan MacKinnon got the secondary assist on the goal which also extended his season-opening point streak to 11. The Nova Scotia native has 17 points in 11 games with three power play goals.

The duo sit behind Mats Sundin (30: 1992-93), Peter Stastny (16: 1987-88), MacKinnon (13: 2019-20) and Joe Sakic (12: 1988-89) for longest season-opening point streaks in franchise history.
