Cale Makar Named 1st Star of the Month

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar was named the First Star of the Month for October by the NHL. It is Makar’s first time with the top accolade and his second time being awarded a star of the month after he earned the Second Star of the Month for November of last season.

The 26-year-old Calgary native became the second defenseman in NHL history to have earned at least a point in the first 11 games of the season. He trails Bobby Orr who had a 15-game season-opening point streak in 1973-74.

Makar is tied with Vegas Golden Knights’ Mark Stone for most points in the league (as of Nov. 1) with 18 and tops the league for most points by a defenseman. He also topped the October leaderboard in assists (15), power-play assists (8) and is tied for power-play points with 9.

The 6-foot blueliner has six multi-point outings in the 11 games played, most recently in the 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on his birthday. His total time on ice — 269:51 — is ranked 10th in the NHL

Makar notched his 350th point in his 322nd game (Oct. 22 vs Seattle Kraken) – making him the third-fastest defenseman in NHL history to hit the milestone. He trails Orr (306 GP) and Paul Coffey(319 GP). In comparison to other defenseman with at least 200 games played, Makar’s average of 1.09 points per game is the second-highest among defensemen in League history — again behind Orr who averaged 1.39 PPG.
