Deen’s Daily: Another Avalanche Injury; Trade Rumors Circulate in Montreal; Celebrini Impresses Again

Published

on

The Avalanche were without Gabriel Landeskog and Ross Colton last week when they scored seven goals to defeat the defending Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers. The sad part is, despite missing their captain and a forward who was red hot to start the season, many around the team celebrated them finally being healthy. It was the healthiest they’ve been all season. And it didn’t last long.

Two nights later, the Avs were destroyed 8-2 by the Tampa Bay Lightning before rebounding to defeat Vegas 2-1 in OT. And on Friday, Colorado fell 5-3 to division rival Dallas Stars. In those three games, the Avalanche have since lost Jonathan Drouin, Miles Wood, Oliver Kylington, and now, Josh Manson. Their injury list has more than doubled in just a week.

Three games, four injuries, and more frustrations about the team’s inability to stay healthy. The injury bug is wiping them out every game. Each time they start to get some good vibes, they suffer another injury. While most of the ailments have hit their forward group, losing Manson for any bit of time is going to hurt — even with the slow start he’s had to the season. With Kylington’s status also unknown, head coach Jared Bednar will likely turn to John Ludvig in tonight’s matchup against the Edmonton Oilers.

Around the NHL

Montreal Hockey Now: Trouble in Montreal this season as the results are not matching the preseason expectations. Two skaters have had their names surface on the trade market. Both a forward and a defenseman. They’re also struggling in the backup goalie position with Caayden Primeau, who hasn’t quite developed as planned thus far.

San Jose Hockey Now: Macklin Celebrini might be my favorite non-Avs player to write about through the first 7 weeks of the season. On Friday, the Sharks dropped eight goals on Seattle and Celebrini scored his fourth goal and sixth point in three games. The rookie forward has three of the team’s eight game-winning goals despite missing 12 games. Another Sharks rookie also scored his first career NHL goal.

Detroit Hockey Now: The Red Wings are in the midst of a homestand that could determine the future of head coach Derek Lalonde. And on Friday, the New Jersey Devils escaped with a 5-4 victory in regulation in a back-and-forth battle. Among the issues ailing Detroit is its PK. New Jersey scored three times with the man advantage.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Hear from head coach Sheldon Keefe and his thoughts on the comeback victory in Detroit. The Devils also lost a forward to injury — a former Av.

Chicago Hockey Now: Coming off a huge six-goal outburst against the Dallas Stars, the Blackhawks fell to another Central Division foe on Friday. But, have the Blackhawks finally figured out their ideal line combinations?

The Avs were not without Landeskog last night. He has been on LTIR for over 2 years and for all practical purposes is not part of the team. What the Avs were without was the benefit of Landeskog’s salary hit. I really think we need to stop mentioning Landeskog until he actually is with the team everyday, practicing, and prepared to return. Maybe that can be in March with a return in the playoffs, even if only as a “healthy” scratch. Until then, I hope we can refer to the “Landeskog benefit” of spending his salary on some supporting players.… Read more »

Who or what are the Avs trading to acquire all these players?

Glendon Gulliver

That is what management is paid to do. It can’t be done, however, until the Avs are willing to spend the money. This is the problem the Avs are in. If you want to win now, you need to get the players to help win now. Trades don’t just happen. You need to give up something to get something. Trying to get every hole filled may be impossible, but you have to start somewhere. The team just made a move to hopefully improve the backup goalie position. If Manson is out long term, do the Avs need more defense? If… Read more »

Landy isn’t coming back, to consider him part of the team that’s missing due to injury after over 2 years of being out is silly. It’s time to move on.
