Wedgewood’s Status Still Unclear: ‘I’m Guessing It’s Going To Be Week-To-Week’

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Scott Wedgewood’s status is still unclear but it doesn’t sound, as of now, that it’s as bad as initially thought.

Head coach Jared Bednar gave an update following the Avalanche’s Friday practice, saying the goalie is still being evaluated after suffering a lower-body injury in Thursday’s 6-5 OT victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

“I’m guessing it’s going to be week-to-week,” Bednar said.

The team is hoping he avoided a high ankle sprain, which would keep him out for around six weeks. Wedgewood was present at practice and, unlike postgame, was not wearing a walking boot.

Bednar said the team will call up Trent Miner to back up Mackenzie Blackwood. While Colorado’s starter is going to get the brunt of the workload, Miner will start one of Colorado’s back-to-back games at Chicago and Minnesota next week.

It’ll be Miner’s first career NHL start.

Will the avs just ride blackwood until wedgewood comes back and just have miner play only on back to back games

If it was an achilles, grade III high ankle or any of the various foot/ankle bones he would be in a boot. However, even a mid grade high ankle is 4-6 weeks prognosis.

Probably be seeing Miner in a game every 6-7 days for the next month.

This gives miner a chance to see if he’s a serviceable backup.

Watched a bit of Bednar’s presser after practice this morning. And he said definitively that Miner will start one of the back to backs next week (I’m sure Chicago).

Aside from that he made it pretty clear he’s going to start Blackwood a TON.

It sounds like Wedgewood won’t miss a ton of time. Which saves them from having to try & get another goalie via trade or off waivers.

Maybe Annunen is available at a good price…. Just kidding ahaha
