Good & Bad: Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck Gets Another Shutout vs Avalanche

Published

on

Connor Hellebuyck did it again.

Just like he did in November, Hellebuyck continued his redemption against the Avalanche following last year’s disappointing playoff exit with yet another shutout victory. Colorado went into Winnipeg for the second time this season and couldn’t score a goal. This time, it was a 3-0 loss on Saturday in a game that ended with a late empty-net goal for the Jets. Hellebuyck made 22 saves.

Just like the game in November, Winnipeg opened the scoring early and rode that the rest of the way. Nikolaj Ehlers, who also had the empty netter, beat Mackenzie Blackwood on the Jets’ third shot. They eventually added another tally late in the second period from Mark Scheifele on a goal that felt like the one that put things away.

Blackwood finished with 27 saves, again surrendering only two goals. He’s 8-2-1 since joining the Avs. In the three losses with Blackwood in net, Colorado has just two goals.

The two teams will meet again at Ball Arena on Jan. 22 in the fourth and final meeting before the playoffs.

Good: Connor Hellebuyck

There isn’t much else to break down from this game so let’s dive right into the good and bad. Hellebuyck deserves the honor as the highlight of the game.

It’s funny that this stat is a thing given how the playoff series went last year, but did you know Hellebuyck now has three consecutive regular-season shutouts against Colorado?

It started late last season in April, when the Jets came to Ball Arena and walloped the Avalanche 7-0 amid the playoff push for Central Division seeding. Hellebuyck stopped all 30 shots he faced. I remember that game serving as somewhat of a statement by Winnipeg in showing the Avalanche that they were ready for a potential playoff matchup. It ultimately didn’t serve that purpose, but it was still an impressive performance by the visiting team.

Hellebuyck was perfect again this past November — the first meeting between the two clubs since the postseason — and made 35 saves in a 1-0 Winnipeg victory.

He has traditionally been solid against Colorado throughout his career, boasting a 15-7-4 record with five shutouts and a .920 save percentage. Hellebuyck has won eight of the last nine meetings against the Avs.

Bad: Second-period results

There was no reason why the second period should’ve played out the way it did. Colorado entered the frame trailing 1-0 and, in the grand scheme of things, didn’t play a bad period. They had plenty of puck control, offensive zone time, and opportunities to make a play. But for whatever reason, they couldn’t execute.

The Avs ended with just five shots on goal in the period and the only forward shot came from Ross Colton. It’s already hard enough to beat Hellebuyck and it becomes tougher if you’re going to rely on five shots in such a vital part of the game.

Team looked tapped in the third. Third game in four nights and the back of the B2B. Two days rest at home will help a ton. On to the next one.

MacKenzie Blackwood is going to need a game off in one of the next 3, & it better not be against Edmonton

Until Avs solve the Stars and Jets, Lord Stanley’s Cup will be a pipe dream.

Bednar has forgotten how to adjust between periods and the PP is atrocious. Terrible.

I would agree on the Stars. Not sure how a team they smoked a week & a half ago at home. And that they obliterated in 5 last year in the playoffs is necessarily a team they need to be concerned with long term. Looking at all of the Avs realistic potential first round matchups. Winnipeg is still by far the most appealing. During an 82 game season it’s easy to get bogged down in the ebb & flow of individual games. With this team I like to look at the big picture. And others have already mentioned it, the… Read more »

I would argue Minnesota is who we should be hoping for as a first round opponent. The Avs have pretty much owned the Wild for several years now. And though they were without four of their best players in the recent matchup, I’d look more at how we abused their Vezina-calibur goalie as a reason to believe we might have their number. With Winnipeg, I worry that some day Hellebuyck will figure out how to play in the playoffs, and we’ll all be in trouble. And yeah, I’d want to avoid Dallas until absolutely necessary, but mostly because I don’t… Read more »

I wouldn’t mind a first round matchup with Minny either. And I’m 1000% with you on everything you said regarding the Avs having to matchup with the Stars. I despise them to their core. But also begrudgingly respect the hell out of them.

My dream scenario for this season would be the Avs winning the cup by mowing down both Dallas & Vegas.

Avs back to being a one-line team. The top unit was the only one that could create anything offensively, which made it easy for Jets to put their best defence up against them every time.

Winnipeg played a great defensive game though, completely owning the neutral ice. Hellebuyck was great, but he was not the major difference in this one. Blackwood would have made those saves too, had they switched teams. The Jets were simply the better team.

Jon

Jets have a very good defensive structure. If shots got through, Hellebuyck didn’t have to stop many dangerous chances

Since Nichushkin got injured in the last game of December, the Avs are 3-2-1 in January. Those 6 games started with the remarkable comeback and OT win against BUF and included a blowout of MIN. In those games, Rantanen has the only PPG (2) and the Avs have not scored a PPG in the last 4 games. The win against FLA had 2 Toews goals and a EN by Rantanen. Other than a goal against MIN, MacKinnon has not scored a goal in January. Makar has not scored since the BUF game. Basically, if the Avs top players do not… Read more »

It’s pretty plain to see. The Avs go as Nuke goes. When he’s in the lineup, Colorado can beat anyone and hang with everybody. When Chu-Chu is out, it’s an above average team. That’s how much difference Nichushkin makes.

Bob Neal

You two nailed it. Without Nuke they tend to overpass and not take good shots. They are an above average team that ran out of gas in the 3rd. Letโ€™s hope Nuke gets through the rest of the year contributing to the teams success.

Joe

I want deHaan out of my life.

Dave North

It was easy to see in this game why Bednar prefers Middleton over deHaan.

Jeremy

Not sure what you guys are watching. Dehaan is a much more steady presence. And if you’re an analytics person. Up until this goofy Middleton obsession that the Avs got. Dehaan & Malinski were one of the best 3rd pairs in the league. Middleton is slow, makes horrible decisions with the puck & all around pretty useless. He doesn’t seem to know how to use his one asset (his size) to his advantage. The most telling thing to me is Malinski’s play has dipped significantly over the last month. Why? Because he’s been consistently paired with Middleton. The Avs clearly… Read more »
