Deen’s Daily: Avalanche Give Points Away; Nemec Unhappy in New Jersey

The Avalanche couldn’t close out a big game against the Edmonton Oilers. One of New Jersey’s top prospects is unhappy and publicly talking about it. Evgeni Malkin’s Stanley Cup rings were found, and the Bruins still have no idea how to navigate the trade deadline.
All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — January 17.
Colorado Hockey Now
The Avalanche scored the first three goals on Thursday, including this beauty from Nathan MacKinnon.
But that wasn’t enough to defeat the Edmonton Oilers. The road team came roaring back and completed the comeback late in the third period.
Following the loss, the Avs reassigned Jason Polin to the AHL. The team will practice on Friday since there won’t be a morning skate before Saturday’s 2 p.m. puck drop against the Dallas Stars. If I had to guess, I’d say Ivan Ivan is going to get back in the lineup for that game.
Around the NHL
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Tristan Jarry cleared waivers and was assigned to the AHL. Also, remember the robbery at Evgeni Malkin’s house? His Stanley Cup rings were thankfully located. The investigation is still ongoing.
Montreal Hockey Now: Jakub Dobes and the Habs beat the Dallas Stars to improve his record to 4-0-0. The rookie netminder has yet to start a home game but the fans at Bell Centre are probably chomping at the bit to roll out the red carpet for him when he eventually does.
New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils fell 4-3 in OT to the Toronto Maple Leafs in Sheldon Keefe’s first game back in Toronto. But more importantly, young defense prospect Simon Nemec has publicly voiced his displeasure with the organization. This is absolutely a story worth keeping an eye on in the coming months.
NYI Hockey Now: Patrick Roy needed just one word to explain how he feels about his team’s performance. Things are going from bad to worst on Long Island.
Detroit Hockey Now: What a great performance for the Red Wings, using a spectacular power play to get a big win over the Florida Panthers.
Boston Hockey Now: The Bruins still don’t know what they’re going to do at the trade deadline. Sell off some parts? Add rentals? Cam Neely says both are a possibility.
Ottawa hockey Now: Leevi Merilainen didn’t let in a goal until OT but the Senators still lost. The rookie netminder was spectacular in a 1-0 loss to the Washington Capitals.
