The Avalanche put in a disappointing performance against the Minnesota Wild in a game that meant so much in the standings. Their offense dried up and lacked energy in the 3-1 loss.

Around the NHL

Connor McDavid: The Oilers superstar was handed a three-game suspension for his cross-check to the face of Conor Garland on Saturday. In that stretch, the Canucks and Oilers will play again. You have to imagine that Garland is going to be targeted at some point by Edmonton.

Tyler Myers also got a three-game suspension for his equally vicious cross-check to Evan Bouchard behind the play.

Central Division: It was a good day on Saturday when the Avalanche beat the Stars in regulation and Winnipeg and Minnesota both also lost in regulation. But Monday felt more like a blown opportunity for Colorado because the Winnipeg Jets lost in regulation again.

New Jersey Hockey Now: My colleague out in New Jersey, James Nichols, says that the Devils need a change.

NYI Hockey Now: The Islanders won another game, beating the Columbus Blue Jackets who stumbled again. Both teams have hopes of climbing into the wildcard in the Eastern Conference.

Boston Hockey Now: The Bruins outlasted a late push from the Sharks.

San Jose Hockey Now: Rookie Will Smith played his first game against his hometown Bruins. Before the game, the 19-year-old talked about his exciting homecoming.
