Rantanen Traded to Dallas, Signs 8-Year, $96 Million Extension

The Avalanche are going to see a lot of Mikko Rantanen in the coming years. And that includes a return to Ball Arena on March 16 with the Dallas Stars and a possible playoff series in April.
Dallas acquired the former Avs superstar winger six weeks after he was sent to Carolina. In return, the Hurricanes received forward Logan Stankoven, two first-round and two third-round draft picks.
Rantanen then signed an eight-year max term contract extension worth $96 million with the Stars as part of the deal. He also got a full no-movement clause.

The past six weeks have been quite a whirlwind for all parties involved. Looking back, it’s almost unheard of to see something like this play out, especially given the talent involved and all three teams being Stanley Cup contenders.
“I donโt think itโs something either of us are really looking forward to, playing against each other, just with the history we have with him and winning and him being such a key part of this team and such a close friend,” defenseman Devon Toews said of Rantanen. “Itโs always hard to have those matches against each other.
“It just doesnโt sound fun for me to have to deal with.”
Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland spent most of the summer and the start of the regular season trying to lock up his superstar winger. The talks reached a stalemate after reports surfaced that Rantanen’s camp was looking for a deal upwards of Nathan MacKinnon’s $12.6 million AAV — and as high as $14 million per year, matching Leon Draisaitl’s extension with Edmonton.
“We made a really hard decision, and it was a hockey decision,” MacFarland said of the initial Rantanen trade in January. “Mikko is a great hockey player and a great person, and I’ll always wish him the best. But we don’t spend much time on seeing what other teams may or may not do. I think the Dallas Stars got a great hockey player and a great person.”
With both sides far apart on a deal, the Avs decided to move forward with a trade, suddenly shipping off the fan favorite to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Martin Necas, Jack Drury, and two draft picks.
Necas, who was Carolina’s leading scorer at the time, has enjoyed instant success in Colorado. He has five goals and 10 assists in 14 games, which includes three game-winning goals.
Rantanen, on the other hand, struggled in Carolina. In 13 games, he scored two goals and added four assists. He was admittedly blindsided by the trade and needed time to adjust. While dealing with his on-ice struggles, the Hurricanes were also trying to lock him up to an extension, which Rantanen refused to do.

Instead of keeping him as a rental and continuing extension talks in the summer, Carolina instead chose to recoup assets. The Stars, however, were unwilling to part with this significant of a package without permission to speak to Rantanen first. Talks began late Thursday night and went through the morning before a deal was reached.
The trade was contingent on Rantanen signing an extension with Dallas.
Ultimately, Carolina sent away Necas, Drury, a second, and a fourth to acquire Stankoven, Taylor Hall, two firsts and two thirds. In hindsight, they probably want a do-over.
Let the moose hunting begin. Letโs boo him next home game!!
Bring it the f*** on.
Strangely ironic, but you’re right. If he had stayed in Carolina, there would have been no hard feelings, he would have been welcomed back with a tribute video, and Avs fans would have been rooting for a Finals matchup between the two teams. Choosing to sign a frigging extension with literally our most hated rival to play against us four times a year at minimum – not to mention likely frequent playoff matchups – yeah, he’s dead to the State of Colorado, and the booing with be both merciless and deserved.
The fact that Mikko was offered the richest winger contract in NHL history, only to turn it down, get traded, underperform on a good team to get traded again and sign for $250k/year more than staying at the place you claim you wanted to be all along is wild. I know it’s $4 million extra over the length of the contract and they don’t have state taxes but is that worth looking like a diva and no longer playing next to Nate and Cale?
No doubt. Turned down the avs 11.75, but took 12 from Dallas. Going to be really easy to chant “Fuck-you Meek-Oh” at games…
I would like to know Jeremy’s opinion on this subject.
He doesn’t have opinions. He is only right – and you are wrong.
(…and then you must apologize).
I mean, let’s face it – dude isn’t the brightest bulb in the string…its not like he’s splitting atoms on his maintenance days.
OH NOES!!! Now he’s a gonna score goalz on goalz on goalz on the AVS! Like 15, or something higher than the 15!!
I hope he falls off the proverbial cliff and this contract ages poorly as Father Time catches up to him. I am burning my Mikko shirt!!! I hope 29 and 8 dance him in the playoffs and make him look bad!
I’ve said it before, but now it makes even more sense: let’s do everything we can to stay in the first wild card and play Vegas or Edmonton, instead of going up against stupid Dallas followed by stupid Winnipeg.
Aarif, this seems odd to me. Were the Avs trying to sign Moose for less than $12M AAV? If they offered $12M AAV, did Moose want and think he’d get more?
Seems like a lot of drama for what could’ve been him staying here given the cap going up, no?
Reportedly their last offer was 11.75 but at the time he and his agent were misjudging his market value. It took 3 teams to tell him a hard no at 14M AAV before they came to their senses. Corey Masisak with the Denver Post reported that with Texas’ no income tax it will save 4.224M over the course of his 96M contract. That’s another big house and other luxury car for the garage ๐
I am not privy to Corey’s math or sourcing, but that seems high. He’s pegging it at 4%. But the tax savings only apply to home games. Visiting states consider the income as having been earned in their state. So the away games in high tax states like Minnesota and California will still take their respective bites. At any rate (pardon the pun) if state tax were an issue, his representation should be highly questioned.
Wishing Mikko the best of luck and success in the future. Mikko was my favorite Avs player of all time. Still can’t get over losing that much talent. What a waste! No respect for Avs management anymore. They don’t respect their fans. I am the least interested in Avs games than I have been in 30 years.
What happened with Rantanen in Carolina only confirms once again that MacFarland made the right decision in his case.
I don’t know how you can blame Avs management here when Mikko was offered the same thing from the Avs as he got from Dallas. He just wanted to get paid and it did not work out for him in the end.
As a fan we fall in love with players. To stay on top management can’t do that. It’s how pro sports works. If it makes you feel better the Avs are bringing back Erik Johnson!
Sorry, Peggy.
Mikko got greedy – was reading his own press clippings, drinking his agent’s koolaid.
Thought he was worth $14M – dug his heels in and woke up in Carolina.
Now Dallas.
Bottom line, the team is in a better position to win the cup today, than with Mikko and his agent. (IMO).
And that is what Avs Fans deserve.
I get he was your fav – sorry for your loss.
Rantanen: ‘It was an easy decision’ to sign extension in Dallas
‘Nuff said…..Bring it Mikko – just make sure to keep your head up come PO time!
Half the time alls that is needed to put him on the ice is a gentle breeze!… can’t wait to see him in playoffs, let it happen Rd 1!! And…helz YEAH… the CONDOR is back!!๐คฃ I’m sorry to see Mitts go. Yes he was very under-performing but how much of that was on our terrible luck with top6 injuries this year? Most certainly plenty was on him and Coyle is much more suited to role that is left after adding Nelson. I don’t know if anybody is paying attention and maybe someone knows more about this than I do but…… Read more »
We will be playing Dallas in round 1. I think Mikko will hurt more than help. Hopefully the Avs show up for the series. This is so great for hockey on all levels.
Landyโs not coming back.
I hope he dogs it in Dallas like he did here..his defending was atrocious
How does Eric Tulsky remain employed?
Bear with me. The abacus is running hot.
Carolina traded Necas, Drury, Taylor Hall, a 2nd, a 3rd, and a 4th, for Logan Stankoven and two 1sts. I might have missed some details.
Wow.
Hard to tell if itโs Moose or his agent, but signing Dallas for only a little more money than Avs is totally lame.
Wild day and it was great to pick up Nelson while dumping Mitts. We brought in some size and grit to pair with our speedy top two lines.
CMac definitely did not get the job done on the D line and it wouldโve been a coup to snag Carlo or Ferraro.
If our special teams improve with this new chemistry, we could go deep, but this isnโt a slam dunk cup team on paper.
