Report: Dallas Stars Have Framework for Mikko Rantanen Trade, Pending Contract Extension

Published

on

Mikko Rantanen was a member of the Avalanche six weeks ago before suddenly being dealt to the Carolina Hurricanes. And according to the latest reports, he’s heading back to the Western Conference as a member of the Dallas Stars before Friday’s trade deadline.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported late Thursday night that talks were intensifying between the Hurricanes and Stars to ship the Finnish forward to Colorado’s Central Division rival. Hours later, Friedman said that a framework of a deal was agreed to between both clubs, with a possible contract extension coming in the early morning hours.

Meaning, the Stars would be acquiring Rantanen and instantly signing him to a contract extension.

Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli later added to the report. He said that the Stars and Rantanen’s agents are actively negotiating a new contract — with Carolina’s permission — and a trade is conditioned on an extension.

It’s unclear at this time what that deal could look like. But all signs are pointing towards Rantanen being moved as long as Stars GM Jim Nill is able to meet the demands of Rantanen’s camp.

If Rantanen joins Dallas, he’ll be back in Denver on March 16 to take on the Avs for the first time since being moved in late January. Neither team has locked in a playoff seed yet, but there’s a huge possibility that Colorado and Dallas could meet in the postseason and likely in the first round.

We’ll see how it plays out before Friday’s 1 p.m. deadline.

Rantanen was back on the market because of a refusal to sign an extension with the Canes before the deadline. Carolina traded Martin Necas, Jack Drury, and two draft picks to acquire him and was unwilling to risk losing him as a free agent on July 1.

Rantanen has also struggled since leaving Colorado. After playing on Thursday for Carolina, Rantanen finished his 13th game with the club and has just two goals and four assists. It’s a far cry from the 100-plus point pace he was playing at with the Avs.

More to come.

Worried

In the end, everything can be explained. That’s why MacFarland was willing to pay a high price to acquire Brock Nelson. I hope Bednar has already started working on the game plan for the first round against the Stars. To date, in 3 encounters against coach Peter Deboer in the playoffs, Bednar and his team have been eliminated each time:   2019 – San Jose Sharks coach Peter Deboer : eliminates Bednar’s team in the 2nd round 2021 – Vegas Knights coach Peter Deboer : eliminates Bednar’s team in the 2nd round 2024 – Dallas Stars coach Peter Deboer :… Read more »

Forgive me

For the series against the Stars, the Avalanche won’t have the imponderables on their side. Duchene will have the knife between his teeth. And it will be the same for Rantanen. MacFarland made the mistake of not including a clause preventing Carolina from trading Rantanen to a Western Conference team. I don’t think Pierre Lacroix would have made that mistake. Also, the mistake of choosing Ryan Johansen instead of Duchene seems to still haunt MacFarland. As for WedgeWood, if all goes well, he should not remain on the bench against his former team in the 1st round. I have the… Read more »

Trading Duchene got the Avs a cup

Forgive me

In the days following the acquisition of Ryan Johansen, Nashville bought out Duchene’s contract. Johansen’s and Duchene’s contracts were of equal value. It is not the Duchene transaction that is at issue here.

Joe Cerwinske

F$%@… This is a worst case scenario, though one I had definitely considered as soon as the initial trade was announced. My question is: he’s had six weeks to negotiate an extension with Carolina – a perennial contender with a good coach and great core – but still needed time to think about signing it; now they’re going to bang out an extension with Dallas in a day, with him never skating with them, and this is okay with Mikko? Is it simply a matter of hard feelings, and his desire to stick it to the team that drafted him… Read more »

Probably because there is no state income tax in Texas, explains alot don’t you think

Derek

Dont think florida has state tax either man

Jeremy

I would like to know why he’s willing to say yes to an extension in Dallas. But told Carolina he wasn’t sure & wanted to wait. Maybe in his brief time there he really..really didn’t vibe with Brindamour’s system? Not sure what else it could be? He’s got a young talented center there to play with in Aho. Maybe there truly is an element of wanting to stick it to his old organization lol.

Hell hath no fury like a moose scorned.

Mutt Lang

Broken record much? And no… you never actually digress. I don’t think that word means what you think it means.

Jeremy

I’d rather be right & know what I’m talking about & considered annoying to the ignorant. Than just parrot dumb Avs front office propaganda.

Ok, please let us know when that happens.

JK! That one practically wrote itself, man!

Walter

There are a lot of Finns (Lindell, Granlund, Heiskanen) and the Stars are a well-managed team that will be competitive for a long time with all the good young players. The spotlight will not all be on him.

Kelly Clifton

Why do you have to make him a bad guy. He is a professional player who wants to live and work in a place and with an organization he likes and is comfortable with. The bad guys if there are any would be management, who have a business to run and are neccesarily impersonal in their decision making. Very few situations in life come down to a victim/perp scenario. V/P perception is false and offers only ongoing discontentment.

Byronleemarley

When is anyone else going to realize that Rantanen is not worth the money he’s reportedly asking for, especially if he’s not playing with a center named either MacKinnon or McDavid? He doesn’t merit anywhere near Draisaitl money. Whoever does end up giving him what he wants will be kicking themselves for years to come.

Jeremy

Some major ignorance & or cope here. Will his numbers take a hit not playing with MacKinnon? They could as anybody’s would. But he’s still an elite goal scorer. And Dallas is an incredible organization with plenty of talent. He’ll be excellent there. And now the Avs get to see him in the postseason..smfh.

It was always much more logical to re – sign him. But I digress…at least they got a great 4C in Jack Drury out of all of this!!

“Some major ignorance & or cope here”.

Actually, Jeremy, your posts aren’t always that bad…

๐Ÿ˜„

(Leave out the customary childish intros, and you have a few decent ones).

Derek

Real questions here is what and who are dallas willing to give up for mikko? I would imagine wyatt or someone was attached to the deal. Cant remember offhand who just signed an extension with the stars but wow this would suck seeing miiko in dallas ugh

As for Rants, it was clear that there came a point that they decided to NOT resign him at ANY price.

The FO made a strategic decision that having a Necas + a (re-signed) Nelson was better than an overpaid Miko.

Mathematically,

Necas + Nelson > Rantanen

Jeremy

They could’ve had Mikko & still acquired Nelson. One has nothing to do with the other. His cap hit is all of 3 million.

gimmepuck

You miss the point – they are both completely inter-twined.

The Avs FO made the decision that they did not want him anymore.

They decided they would pay 2 stars – MacK and Cale – not 3 – and move on with a AAV structure that ensured more depth.

Rants was the 3rd star who became (literally) the odd man out.

(His/Agent’s nonsense about wanting $Drai$ just pushed it over the edge)

He’s a Dallas guy now – and I’m 100% ok with the way this worked out. Game on!

Calvin

I agree completely!!

He is not even in MacK or Draisaitlโ€™s league! He leached points off MacK, and I would have liked him to resign with us, but for way less than we even offered him.

He selfishly wanted too much money and I donโ€™t want someone like that on our team. Again MacK leads as an example here. Took a hit his last contract to help the team and then got what he deserves with his current. Rantanen doesnโ€™t care about the Avs.

You wonโ€™t be missed soft Moose!

Kris

It’s very clear that Dallas will go out of its way to hurt the Avalanche. Dallas must certainly see Rantanen as the wild card that will allow them to eliminate the Avalanche this spring and fight them fiercely in the years to come.

Karl Keen

Dallas doesnโ€™t usually add softer players, but they did get bigger. Where is Bad Idea to beat up onโ€ฆ.

Rambo

With the acquisition of Brock Nelson (including Calum Ritchie) and his mistake on Johansen, MacFarland has a lot of pressure. The same goes for Bednar, who has been eliminated by Peter Deboer on numerous occasions. If the Avalanche lose in the first round, I predict that heads will roll.

ricoflashback

If it’s Dallas, I think it means good-bye Jamie Benn and his expiring $9.5M salary. And I’m sure Dallas will have to send a decent player to the Hurricanes. It will suck seeing Rants in a Stars uniform but I still believe it was the right deal for the Avs. I’ll take Necas with his much lower yearly AAV and a serviceable Drury as opposed to the $12M to $14M AAV it will take to sign Mikko to an extension. Granlund is also probably gone next year with his UFA status and $5M salary. I’d still like to see if… Read more »

Joe Murphy

Hard to know whatโ€™s true, but Moose said he wouldโ€™ve taken less than 12 to stay.

gimmepuck

Actually, Rants said he would have ‘taken less than MARKET’ to stay….unfortunately, at the time, he probably felt his (market) value was north of $14M (ie. Drai $).

(zero points in the last 4 games and counting…)

Jeremy

Sure seems that way now after signing for 12.

gimmepuck

Sure does.

He got schooled in the meaning of FAFO.

Karl Keen

Benn constantly hurts the Avs in playoffs physically and on the score sheet so Iโ€™m good if he isnโ€™t gone. Mikko doesnโ€™t bring nearly the bite or physicality although he will be able to muscle little boy Girard to and fro in front of the net still.

ricoflashback

UPDATE on rumored trade of Rants to Dallas: “Unfortunately, reports this morning indicate that the two teams will not be coming to an agreement. It sounds as if a deal was in place, but the Stars were adamant about needing an extension in place before the could pull the trigger, and Rantanen just wasn’t ready to commit to that. NHL insider Cam Robinson believes money is not the issue for Rantanen, but rather he wants to take some time to figure out where he wants to spend the rest of his career.” I always thought that Mikko would go to… Read more »

What are we waiting for then to massacre the Stars? ALL IN!!

Jeremy

WRONG

Joe Murphy

Letโ€™s see whatโ€™s the best way to put this: Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

Calvin

Rantanen doesnโ€™t fit in with Carolina. They are a dump it in and work hard team. Rantanen isnโ€™t known for his hard work on the iceโ€ฆ

If he goes to Dallas, I look forward to the Avs dumping him on his butt again and again in the playoffs, and his sub-100 point seasons he will have.

dk

I should hate this, and I do, kind of… I grew up a North Stars fan in Minnesota and I hate the f****** Dallas Stars. But, realistically, there aren’t any players on the Stars with the playmaking ability of MacKinnon. Not even close. My gut tells me that Robertson and Johnston might go to CAR to make this deal happen… But to think that Rantanen is going to light up the Avs in the one remaining game and the POs is cognitively dissonant. If/when the Avs face the Stars in the playoffs, Rantanen may score one or two goals in… Read more »

Would really like to off load wood and pickup another d man since shipped off kylington.. cmac running out of time and available players

Tyler

What a disaster for the Avs. Carolina is a joke.

Jeremy

So…he signs for 12 (don’t even come at me with that bs no state income tax argument). Guess this confirms the Avs lowballed him. And wouldn’t go above 11.5 – 11.75.

Great outcome we got here. To all the people that have been giving me crap for the last month. I was right, you were wrong. I’ll be accepting apologies.

gimmepuck

You may not actually realize this, but you have become a constant source of comedic relief for many here!

dk

C’mon, man… You’ve been giving crap as much as taking it. No sympathy for mouthy railbirds. Sorry.

Trouble for the Avs: The Carollina Hurricanes have dealt forward Mikko Rantanen to the Dallas Stars in a delayed trade that was contingent on the winger signing an extension with his new team, sources told ESPN. In exchange, Carolina will receive two first-round picks and forward Logan Stankoven. Meanwhile, representatives for the Stars and Rantanen were busy on Friday, ironing out an eight-year extension. The Hurricanes, who traded for Rantanen in January in a massive three-way deal, tried to sign the 28-year-old winger to an extension. However, Rantanen told Carolina he wasn’t ready to make a decision, sources said, which… Read more »
