Deen’s Daily: Avs’ New Center Depth; Crosby Scores on Fleury; Colorado’s Homestand Finale

The Avalanche’s center depth is incredible, and we’ll get another look at it tonight to close out the homestand. Sidney Crosby got one last goal on Marc-Andre Fleury. Also, the No. 2 overall pick from last June might make his season debut at Ball Arena.
All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — March 10.
Colorado Hockey Now
The Avalanche are shooting for perfection tonight, as they close out their six-game homestand against the lowly Chicago Blackhawks. They’ve given the Avs quite a bit of trouble this year but something tells me the lineup Colorado has now will run away with this one. The Avalanche are 5-0-0 so far.
Part of that lineup is the new center depth. In the matter of six weeks, Chris MacFarland acquired three centermen to play behind Nathan MacKinnon. That depth is going to be a huge problem for the rest of the NHL.

Hopefully the Avs will beat Chicago like they should, instead of the play we often see from the Avs when they play a lesser opponent, when it seems they feel that talent alone will lead them to victory. The team is working on chemistry with their new players and that will only happen if they give it 100%, roll all 4 lines, and treat this and every game as a playoff game.
I feel like we’re seeing with Michkov exactly why Gauthier didn’t want to play in Philly for Torts. If I were a young offensive dynamo, I wouldn’t want to play for a stuck in his ways old school coach like that either.
Torts is weird to figure out. It’s not like Babcock where every player who played for him seemingly loathes him. Tortorella has guys who swear by him. And others who literally wanted to fight him lol. But to your point in this day & age his coaching style & abrasiveness is a complete 180 from what any of these kids coming into the league are use to. So if he & other more old school coaches don’t adapt to that, it’s a problem. He gets results usually initially. If Philly were to let him go. He’s probably exactly what my… Read more »
Coaches like Torts get limited results; they can bring structure and accountability but it’s often done in harsh ways young players frequently don’t respond to.
