Deen’s Daily: An Uninspring Avs Shootout; Homestand Observations; Crosby Is Still Good at Hockey

Published

The Avs collected five of six points during a three games in four nights stretch. But the shootout on Monday was uninspiring in every way. Also, an in-depth look at Monday’s victory over the Blackhawks to cap off an impressive homestand. In other news, Sidney Crosby is still good at hockey.

All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — March 12.

Colorado Hockey Now

The Avs lost 2-1 to the Wild in a shootout. It was great to see them fight for a goal in the third period to force OT. It’s too bad things didn’t go as planned in the shootout.

On Monday, Nathan MacKinnon recorded his 1,000th point, not once, but twice. Catch my in-depth observations piece from that game here.

That piece was one of my favorites to write all season. It’s always fun to share the behind the scenes sights and sounds from the locker room. I openly wrote about how grumpy the team felt earlier in the year but now it seems like it’s gone completely the other way. Which is great.

This might sound unconventional but can you substitute a goalie for the shootout? For some reason Blackwood looks and feels uncomfortable with a shootout. Iโ€™m not sure why as he stops breakaways during regular play but really seems to struggle with this overtime aspect of the game. It was a good effort but you could see that the Avs were a little out of sync. And, unlucky with all the goalposts and crossbars clanked.

Walter

It’s possible to change goaltenders for the shootout. However, it is not recommended to bring in a goalkeeper who is not warmed up because of the increased risk of injury.

Spot on Rico. Blackwood has looked terrible in the shootouts Iโ€™ve seen him in. Good thing they donโ€™t come up very much. Iโ€™d still play Wedgie in his place despite the threat of injury. Mild obviously were wanting to get to a shootout as obviously Blackwoodโ€™s reputation is not very good. Iโ€™m still glad he is our goalie and maybe this is something he can work on in the future after he wins a Cup.

Thank god shootouts disappear when playoffs start, otherwise it would a huge psychological disadvantage for the Avs right when the score is even in the 3rd.
