Deen’s Daily: Avs Keep Rolling; Tortorella Fired; Ugly Eastern Wildcard Race

The Avalanche kept their hot streak alive against an equally great team as of late. In Philadelphia, the Flyers made a massive late-season coaching change. Also, Sidney Crosby broke another record and Alex Ovechkin showed why he’s all class.
All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — March 28.
Colorado Hockey Now
The Avalanche saved their best defensive performance in quite some time for a team that was 9-1-0 in their last 10 games. They beat the L.A. Kings with ease on Thursday.
Charlie Coyle has been a staple of the third line during this recent hot stretch. Here’s what he’s brought to that unit, courtesy of my colleague Colleen Flynn.
Around the NHL
Philadelphia Hockey Now: Lots of news out of Philadelphia. First, John Tortorella was fired with nine games remaining. Then, general manager Danny Briere met with media to discuss why the move was made. The Flyers had a game to play later that night, and beat the Habs. In the process, Cam York was benched again. Interim coach Brad Shaw explained why.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Fun story after the Capitals and Wild game. Ovechkin had his team come back out on the ice to congratulate Marc-Andre Fleury, who will be retiring at the end of this season.
Crosby also broke another record, but it was overshadowed by an embarrassing loss.
Montreal Hockey Now: Speaking of embarrassing, the Habs don’t feel great after losing to Philly. They’re barely hanging on to that second wildcard spot.
Detroit Hockey Now: The Wings lost again, falling more out of favor in the wildcard race.
Ottawa Hockey Now: Ottawa is the only Eastern Conference team in the wildcard race trying to lock up a spot.
Florida Hockey Now: Another injury status update from Paul Marice. That Brad Marchand debut is getting closer.
