Deen’s Daily: Mikko Rantanen Breaks Another Record; Leafs Are For Real; Utah Mammoth!

The first segment of the post-playoff mailbag is here. What went wrong in the postseason for Colorado? Also, the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking pretty, pretty good. And in Winnipeg, Mikko Rantanen went off, again.
All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — May 8.

The worst part about the Avs going out in the first round is that we’re still so far away from the draft and free agency. Which means we’ve got more time to talk through what went wrong in the playoffs before looking ahead and speculating on the moves to come.
After the loss this weekend, I sent out a mailbag to collect questions about all of the above. I got way more than I thought, which is awesome. We’ve got a passionate Avalanche fanbase and community here, and it’s great to see how much everyone cares.
I decided to split the questions into segments, with the first one getting released yesterday. It covers everything about Jared Bednar’s job. Chris MacFarland’s moves and what went wrong in the postseason.

Stanley Cup Playoff Recap
Game 2 — Toronto Maple Leafs vs Florida Panthers: Are the Maple Leafs for real? It sure feels like it. They don’t seem to fold or get rattled as easily as years past. They stopped the Senators’ comeback attempt in Round 1, and they didn’t let the Anthony Stolarz injury sink them in Game 1 against Florida. In Game 2, the Panthers led 1-0 and 2-1, but Toronto took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission. They went on to win 4-3 to gain a 2-0 series lead as the series shifts to Florida. This is already the farthest Toronto has made it in the postseason in 21 years.
Game 1 — Winnipeg Jets vs Dallas Stars: One of the things that sank the Avs was the play of Rantanen. He factored in on every goal in the Stars’ four-goal comeback surge in the third period of Game 7. And against Winnipeg in Game 1, Rantanen recorded a hat trick in his second consecutive game to help Dallas take the series opener by a final score of 3-2. Rantanen is the third player to ever score hat tricks in consecutive playoff games and the first in nearly 40 years. He also set an NHL record by factoring in on 12 consecutive goals for his team. That streak is still active and can be extended in Game 2.

First – After Dallas traded for Rantanen, I had a feeling that if they got past Colorado in the first round, they would likely win the Cup. Similarly, if the Avs beat the Stars, I thought they would win the Cup as well – basically, whoever came out of that series was my pick. My reasoning for Dallas winning: they’ve always been a well coached, very deep team, with solid-to-great goaltending; what they’ve lacked (that has held them back in the playoffs) is that alpha scorer who they can consistently count on for big goals. When they added Rantanen, they… Read more »

Rantanen’s current performance shows that Bednar had not been able to get the best out of him.
If you consider that his goals are really the result of pure talent, I agree with you completely.
That’s rubbish. Rantanen was top 7 all time in points per game in the playoffs under Bednar.
Rantanen could have been first all time in points per game in the playoffs. We rarely remember the 2nd.
Yes indeed, who remembers Mario Lemieux?
Who is Mario Lemieux?
Fire MacF, and Bednar… At the end of the day, YOU WERE/ARE RIGHT Aarif..What has hammered this team for 3 straight seasons is bad player moves, knee jerk decisions and bad coaching. Pretty much everything…Stand by your convictions Sir..
How to be right Most of the time. Say how everything is wrong and how you would do it better. When the ( I will be generous) 25% thing does not happen, claim I told you so. The only thing worse than an Armchair GM/Coach is one that can look back and say how right they were. Did we lose, yes, does it suck, yes. But to say that everything is wrong with this team is a overstatement. You want this team to really be out of its window, you blow it up. You want to be better you make… Read more »
Nobody ever said everything was wrong. But they’ve lost in the 1st round 2 out of the last 3 years. And with the elite talent they have. Have only been past the 2nd rd once in the Bednar era. I don’t get the logic of just sitting back & not questioning the GM of your favorite team. Especially when the results aren’t there. By your logic no GM would/should be questioned or therefore fired. Because only he can really properly evaluate whether his moves are correct or not. And we should just let said person keep trying until he hopefully… Read more »
That’s a very…”sheepish” post mate.
The Mammoth… pedestrian and trite. I’m still going to refer to them as the Pluralists or the Celestial Kingdom.
Not only did Rantanen cut out the heart of his former franchise, but he showed it to management with yet another hat trick in Game 1 of the second round. If I was MacKinnon, I would be soooooooooo pissed . . .
Mackinnon will recover. He will certainly have the chance to see Rantanen this summer on a golf course. Rantanen is not dead. He only changed teams. Mackinnon inherits a great player in Necas and he has probably already forgotten that Rantanen is not on the ice. His team was only 12 minutes away from winning the Stanley Cup. They can pick themselves up next year by working a little harder and everything should be fine.
Yeah..I’m sure he completely didn’t register him as the guy who scored a 3rd period hatty against his team.
While Necas was changing his tampon in the locker room after colliding with the boards…on his own. His biggest game 7 achievement.
The trade wrecked MacKinnon’s hockey career. Dude needs to get out of this spithole ASAP if not earlier.
The Stars should reward MacFarland with a full playoff share after they win it all this postseason.
