Deen’s Daily: Joel Quenneville is Back In the NHL; Oilers Take Control of Series

Published

on

Joel Quenneville is back in the NHL, officially. Also, the Washington Capitals fought back in Game 2, but the Vegas Golden Knights couldn’t do the same.

All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — May 9.

Colorado Hockey Now

I know it’s not everybody’s favorite thing to do, but given the direction many of the Avalanche mailbag questions were heading, I decided to revisit the Mikko Rantanen saga and answer any and all post-playoff loss questions about him.

Rantanen is breaking records and doing things he’s never done before in the postseason. And I’m willing to admit he probably wouldn’t be doing this if he stayed in Colorado. But you have to admit that it’s tough for Chris MacFarland and Joe Sakic to sit back and watch him go out there night in and night out and completely take over the hockey world. It’s what he’s always been capable of and so often did for the Avs.

Tonight, Rantanen and the Stars play Game 2 in Winnipeg. You have to imagine the Jets will come out strong to avoid another loss at home and falling behind 2-0 before heading to Dallas.

Stanley Cup Playoff Recap

Game 2 — Carolina Hurricanes at Washington Capitals: The Capitals answered back in Game 2, holding the Hurricanes to a goal and winning 3-1 to tie the series as it shifts to Carolina for two games.

Game 2 — Edmonton Oilers at Vegas Golden Knights: The Oilers were in the driver’s seat for most of the night. But two goals in the third from Vegas evened things up at 4-4 to force overtime. The Knights went on to kill off an entire five-minute major where Edmonton got eight shots on goal but couldn’t score (Nic Roy, what in the world were you doing?!) In the end, the winner came from Leon Draisaitl later in the period. Edmonton heads home with a 2-0 series lead.

Tonight’s Schedule

  • Game 3: Toronto Maple Leafs at Florida Panthers (5 pm MT on TNT & truTV)
  • Game 2: Dallas Stars at Winnipeg Jets (7:30 pm MT on TNT & truTV)

Around The NHL

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The team in Pittsburgh is doing an excellent job of player report cards, going through and assessing the season that was for some of their players. Erik Karlsson is on the docket this time around. I’m curious, would readers be interested in me doing this for the Avalanche’s roster while we get through the postseason?

Also, Mike Sullivan dodged questions about his firing when he was introduced in New York. He did mention something particular about having a relationship with the general manager, though.

Montreal Hockey Now: Hockey Canada made it official on Thursday that Nathan MacKinnon, Jordan Binnington, and Brayden Schenn were joining the team for the World Championships. Nick Suzuki, however, will not.

NYI Hockey Now: It doesn’t appear that Ken Holland wants the Islanders GM job. At least not right now. But maybe?

Detroit Hockey Now: The Red Wings broadcast, run by Fan Duel, is cutting two fan favorites and longtime parts of their product. It sucks. I grew up in Detroit with both of these guys on my screen and it’s unfortunate that Fan Duel is sinking their broadcasts league-wide. Ever since Fox Sports sold, that broadcast has tanked.

San Jose Hockey Now: The Sharks’ AHL team has been eliminated at the hands of the Colorado Eagles

Florida Hockey Now: The biggest news of the day. Former Blackhawks and Panthers coach Joel Quenneville is back in the NHL and coaching the Anaheim Ducks. He was officially introduced on Thursday after accepting the job. Ducks GM Pat Verbeek released a statement upon announcing the hire about how he went about interviewing and vetting Quenneville.

That’s a yes from me on the player report cards. An excellent idea.

Jeremy

I’m surprised there hasn’t been a virtue signaling comment yet. Regarding Quennville & how he’s the devil incarnate & should never been allowed to work again.

Roger Hutton

Hooray for Quenneville and boo to all the moralists out there. Happens in every sport if you are in it long enough. And , yes, I am for grading the Avs players. One more thought and I am going to take a hit on this one; when are these athletes going to see how they are exploited by their countries? Playing in the world championship, the regular season, and the winter Olympics. Come on, their bodies aren’t made of steel. Even God rested on the 7th day.

Jeremy

I get what you’re saying. I’m sure the Avs aren’t thrilled that Mackinnon is going to of all things the pretty irrelevant world championships. But the guy clearly loves hockey. I don’t think he’s married, doesn’t have kids. So if he wants to go play more hockey. He doesn’t have to worry about catching flack on that end either lol.

Glendon Gulliver

I do not think any team is thrilled to have their players in these tournaments, but the players want it. The risk of injury is great and no one needs to look further than the injuries and lack of rest in the 4 Nations.

Jstripsky

He’s going for a chance to play with Crosby and to beg Dubas to bring him to Pittsburgh. That came directly from my father’s brother’s cousin’s former roommate.

Boom Boom Beck

The assault was a human resources matter and should have been investigated as such. Lest we forget, Q was a hockey coach.

Glendon Gulliver

Yes to the player cards. I read a lot of the Pittsburgh Hockey Now posts. Through out the season, PIT had many of the same issues as the Avs. Top heavy lineup, lack of bottom 6 scoring, and goaltender issues. Many of their posts about trades, mirrored what the Avs needed and still need.

Boom Boom Beck

Aarif is so much better than Kingerski, who is in dire need of a testosterone injection.

The morality issue with Quenneville is a legitimate issue. The fans care! To think otherwise is either naive or shows a lack of caring for others. It is hypocritical to say it does not matter, but then want to blackball someone for other reasons. You either care about character or don’t. We shouldn’t be cherry picking to justify a decision either way.

The more relevant issue with Quenneville and other coaches is the constant rehiring of the dinosaurs in the NHL. The Athletic had an article about this. Here is a quote, “Contrary to popular belief, there are more than 40 coaches qualified to lead an NHL team. But the coaching carousel won’t slow down if general managers keep repeating the mistakes of others before them by hiring retreads and firing them for the same reasons. In fashion, you’re in one day and out the next. NHL head coaches, on the other hand, are in one day, out the next, and often… Read more »

I’d rather have a dinosaur who has won 3 Stanley Cups than an old dog licking his mom’s boots having won only one Stanley Cup with 2 of the 3 best players in the world over 10 years.

Jeremy

I agree with you 100% that it’s dumb & baffling why so many of the same coaches get recycled. Like…why do Peter Laviolette or Lindy Ruff keep getting head coaching gigs, etc. But I think Quennville has had success everywhere he’s been. Has 3 cups. Even when the Panthers let him go when all this Beech stuff broke. He had that organization on the uptick. So I wouldn’t group him in with a lot of the other tired re – treads. As for the character stuff. The guy has been coaching in the league since the 90’s. Had a stellar… Read more »

The teams should be allowed to employ whomever they want, but just like the 1st amendment, accountability and criticism come with it. They have employed the players and coaches they want, yet we are all here commenting on them, to the point that some are even calling for people to be fired or traded. It is up to management to run their team. That is why they have PR departments. It isn’t just to promote games and sell merchandise, but to listen to the community and fans and be the voice of the team.

Jeremy

Maybe I’m just super cynical. But I don’t think fans care (really). Some within the fanbase will feign outrage initially. But if the Ducks take a leap next year & say make the postseason or go on a run. You’ll suddenly see the same people who were against said hire, find reasons to justify why it was OK or the right call.

If the Hawks were still in the midst of their cup window & Quennville was there coaching still. I question whether the league or team would’ve gone to the extent they did with punishments & suspension.

Taro Tsujimoto

No, the cynical view is that the league only acted because the coach (Aldrich) who sexually assaulted 2 players on the Blackhawks went on to sexually assault a minor. It is undisputed that team officials, including Quenneville, were notified before the 2010 finals about the very recent assaults on their players and did nothing, which violated the Blackhawks own sexual assault policies. After the finals and celebrations, they quietly dismissed Aldrich who had no trouble finding jobs coming off of a Cup win and no red flags put out by the team. It was only after Aldrich went on to… Read more »

What you just described is a huge swath of fans who hate someone if they lose, yet love them if they win. Same goes for dirty players that everyone hates, except when they are on their team. Fans do care and it has caused teams to move certain ways. The fans on this site care, good or bad, about certain players. Hockey is a business and management listens to the customers, or doesn’t listen at their own peril. Of course there are the huge number of vocal fans who scream and demand, only to never carry out their threats.

Jeremy

I didn’t mean fans don’t care literally. I meant they only act bothered or care about certain things if their team isn’t winning.

sjavsfan

It’s amazing how inconsistent the NHL is. Nic Roy gets a 5 minute major and game misconduct last night (the correct call), and Benn does the exact same thing against the Avs and only got a double minor. Make it make sense!!

Rick

With the way Mikko is playing right now it begs the question was Bednar’s coaching a hindrance for Mikko,s style of play to a degree ..As great as Nate is he looks average at best from time to time. That goes for Makar as well.. Good coaches turn great players into superstars.. Lastly, how many players on the Avs roster from last season to this season have improved their game not named LOC? None…Coaching matters.. Bednar should have been fired.
