Deen’s Daily: Avs Took Advantage of Coyle’s Market Value; Devils Dealing Top Defenseman?

Published

The Avs have cap flexibility thanks to their center depth entering the draft. Also, the New Jersey Devils might be looking to move a massive piece off of their blueline.

All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — July 6.

Colorado Hockey Now

This feels like the type of summer that’s going to drag out a little bit longer than usual. At least when it comes to roster movement.

Many of you are confused as to why the Avalanche shed Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood off the roster without replacing them. The short answer is, the UFA market wasn’t as strong as years past, and it’ll likely take a late signing or more importantly, a trade, to fill those spots.

I released a UFA Board that targets five forwards the Avs could look at. But I also do believe Chris MacFarland is keeping a closer eye on the trade market. He admitted that much on July 3 when he spoke to media after the Brent Burns signing.

Also, the Coyle trade was more than just about recouping assets. Colorado used the value of their third-line center to strategically move off of a bad contract. It’s the second time they were able to do that in a short span with Coyle.

And it was well worth it to gain the flexibility and assets they got for future moves. Even if those moves don’t happen right away.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Three teams that could use Rickard Rakell.

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils had a prominent defenseman on the market last week. Could he still be moved?

San Jose Hockey Now: Alex Nedeljkovic was not expecting a trade this summer. He’s now part of the Sharks’ new tandem with Yaroslav Askarov.

Save for the goalie reconfiguration last season, what decision(s) has CMAC made to help this team since he took over as GM in 2022? Seriously how is this guy still employed by the Kroenkes?

You’re delusional

Had he not made the moves he made last year (all of them) good chance we miss the playoffs. Delusional to pretend otherwise.

Jeremy

This is 100% false. You could argue had he not traded Georgiev maybe. But I only give him so much credit for that because he made the goofy decision to go into another season with him as the starter.

The moves later in the year for Nelson, Coyle, EJ, etc. Didn’t have any bearing on them making or missing the playoffs.

You regularly engage in second-guessing, especially when it comes to the Georgiev situation. In his first two seasons with the Avalanche, Georgiev recorded 40 and 38 wins. In both of those seasons, he led the NHL in wins. The team earned 109 and 107 points in the standings, respectively. And during the playoffs, Georgiev was never the reason for the team’s elimination. So to claim that MacFarland should never have started the last season with Georgiev in net and that it was a mistake is nothing short of second-guessing. In other words, the numbers don’t support your argument, Jeremy.

Jeremy

Nice try. You obviously only referenced the amount of wins Georgiev had because in 23 – 24 he was a dumpster fire. His individual statistics were amongst the worst of any starter in the league. So much so that there was serious discussions that Justus Annunen would start game 1 against Winnipeg. Also it’s not second guessing when in real time I was stating that Georgiev was horrendous & needed to be shipped out that off – season. Instead because he was ok in the playoffs beyond that nightmare game 1 in Winnipeg. Cmac decided to roll with him the… Read more »

A backup goalie is expected to win one out of every two games. That was Annunen’s mandate, and it’s Wedgewood’s now. Georgiev averaged 39 wins over roughly 62 games played. That kind of performance is not far from excellence. A goalie’s primary job is to win games. Georgiev gave his team enough confidence to do just that. So yes, Georgiev was doing his job. To suggest that MacFarland should have replaced his goalie before the start of last season is beyond ridiculous. Especially since you’re completely ignoring the actual opportunities MacFarland had during the summer. Maybe the asking price was… Read more »

I’ll start brainstorming & get that to you asap.

Yeah i’m sure that’s why teams are lining up to sign ol Fourgiev right now. Lmfao! Sell your drivel elsewhere. 🤣
