The Avalanche trimmed their roster down to 40 late on Saturday following their preseason victory against the Dallas Stars.

Earlier in the day, Alex Barre-Boulet, Tye Felhaber, Jason Polin, and T.J. Tynan were placed on waivers. If they clear, they’ll be sent to the AHL’s Colorado Eagles.

The other four players, who don’t need waivers and are being sent down outright, include Tristen Nielsen, Jayson Megna, Ivan Ivan, and Sean Behrens.

The latter two are the most notable of the group. Ivan made last season’s opening night roster and was competing with Nikita Prishchepov and Zakhar Bardakov for the fourth-line center role at camp. He’s the first of the three to get cut.

Behrens, a young budding defenseman in the Avs system, had an impressive camp and looked solid in preseason after missing an entire season because of injury in 2024-25. Playing a full year in the AHL, or at least starting there, will significantly benefit his development. His stock, at least to me, is up from where it was even two weeks ago.

Colorado’s roster now consists of 22 forwards, 12 defensemen, and 6 goaltenders. And that includes Logan O’Connor, Samuel Girard, and Mackenzie Blackwood, all of whom have not participated in any full practices or skates since training camp began.
