Avalanche Mailbag: November is Here and the Avs Are Compiling Points — Ask Me Anything!

Published

November is here, and if you can believe it, the regular season is already 15% of the way through.

Any thoughts on the Avs’ play so far? How about their lack of regulation losses or overtime wins?

Or a question about other teams and their performances around the league?

Sam Malinski has become one of my favorite Avs, showing constant growth to the point he could be a 20+ minute a game d-man as early as this season. At this point, what do you think the team’s plan is for him? I would say he’s earned a long-term extension on the 1-year contract he signed this off-season, but I wonder if the front office can afford him as is value increases. As such – and because of our imbalance of right-shot defensemen – he would also seem to be a prime trade asset, with a great deal of value.… Read more »

Great question. I brought this up pre season. He is my favorite Av, and I hope they lock him up long term. My head says they trade him before deadline. What I don’t get, is not giving him more ice time and some PP time to showcase his skills more.

Dan Zimmerer

Why do the Avs look so complacent in OT, including our best players (MacKinnon and Makar)?

Ric

Is JBednar over extending his top line yet again this early in the season? Could that be part of the reason the top guys are ineffective should the game go into overtime?

dk

oops… deleted.

Is Landy still on this team come trade deadline?

Jared Williss

Seriously? You think they waited 3 years for him to be able to come back only to trade him? That’s insane. Of course he will be here come the trade deadline. He will be here until he decides he no longer wants to play.

Karl Keen

Why would anyone trade for contract?!

Jeremy

Of course he will. The Avs basically let him dictate to them, not the other way around. We’ve also been lead to believe he’s a Patton like leader of men lol. Even though in his first game back after 3 years they laid a complete egg (game 3). Then in game 5 were dogshit. And we all know about game 7 & the 3rd period. So I think it’s fair to ask. Does having him in the room & around the team from a rah rah standpoint really matter as much as we’ve been lead to believe? Or was he… Read more »

Balon

Any chance the Avs look at bringing Kadri back, not sure there is room with Nelson at 2C with a NTC but I would love to see it.

Jeremy

Mailbag Question. Since I apparently make up facts & don’t know what I’m talking about regarding the Rantanen contract situation. Or just things in general. Any thoughts on the segment on the Steve Dangle podcast. Where they discussed the Necas extension, and rehash the Rants negotiation. Adam Wylde who does a pod with Adam Walsh says he knows for a FACT that Rantanen was more than willing to sign for 12 – 12.5 in Colorado. And they also reference an article Pierre Lebrun wrote the day after the Carolina trade that reiterate essentially the same thing. And that he wasn’t… Read more »

Keep making up lies

Jeremy

Reference the lies, please. The clip is readily available on Youtube & is just under 10 mins.

Just like I asked the guy who runs this site to do the other day in a different comments section. Before he just deleted the comment lol. As oppose to answer how I was misinformed or making up reports.

Ari Sachter-Smith

Triggered?

Jeremy

Wow..really got me pegged. Maybe comment on the substance of what I’m saying. Oh…that’s right you can’t. Because you & others would rather live in this weird Avalanche group think hive mind. Where everyone else outside of Avs fans & media are wrong about the Rantanen situation. It’s just been almost a year now of pathetic cope.

Ari Sachter-Smith

It’s just funny because you said you were “done litigating the Rantanen trade” yet here you are barking and still trying to gaslight people in the comments about the Rantanen trade lol

Taro Tsujimoto

You are not posting “facts” here, it is called spin. All that we have heard in the blogs has come from Rantanen’s camp. The only facts we know are that the Avs and Rantanen did not reach an agreement, the Canes and Rantanen did not reach an agreement, and Rantanen signed with the Stars for less than Draisaitl’s contract.

Jeremy

Nice cope & actual spin on your part.

Ari Sachter-Smith

“I’m not a towel… you’re a towel”

BK74

I believe Rants would have, but he was holding out hoping for more. the Avs believed he wasnt going to take the $12.5 so they traded him to a team that was willing to offer him $14, but he decided he didn’t like the style of play and refused to sign.

He was “willing”, but didn’t sign on the dotted line in time.

Adam Wylde does not do a podcast with anyone named Adam Walsh. He does have a podcast with Allan Walsh. Allan Walsh is an NHL agent who does not represent Mikko Rantanen.

Adam Wylde is a radio personality — not anybody’s idea of a hockey journalist — who is unlikely to know anything about the Avs-Mikko negotiations. He could also say that he knows for a FACT that lead is lighter than helium. Even if he said it were so (and you don’t provide a link), that does not make it so.

Jeremy

Honest mistake. I know it’s Allan Walsh. You’re right I’m sure he doesn’t talk to other agents & executives who would tell him what happened with Rantanen & that negotiation. Who in turn would share with a guy who he shares a podcast with…silly me!! What about Pierre Lebrun? Does he fit the criteria of a hockey journalist? Because they display a piece in said clip he wrote in the days after the trade, that reaffirms the same narrative. The insane levels of contortion Avs fans such as yourself are willing to do to propagate a false narrative to make… Read more »

Because you cited the podcast I wanted to check it out. My youtube search did not produce the episode you are referring to. Could you please provide a link so that I can locate that episode?

Do you the the avs will trade Girard. It seems like the avs have good depth on D right now.

Jonesy

The top line is humming but do the Avs have enough depth scoring? What would you do short term / long term to improve that?

Glendon Gulliver

The Good: The stars are being stars and scoring, as they should. The PK has been great. Wedgewood has been outstanding. The Bad: The PP. Overtime. Other than the stars and a few others, the rest of the team is not scoring. too many bad passes and sloppy play. The top line and to pair playing too much and not playing the 4th line and bottom pair enough. 82 game scoring pace: Colton 31 pts Nelson 25 pts Drury 25 pts Toews 18 pts Landeskog 18 pts Bardakov 20 pts Brindley 14 pts Manson 13 pts Nichushkin and Olofsson got… Read more »

Jeremy

Good observations. Everyone wants to point at where the Avs are in the standings & be “like see, this team is amazing”. And yes they are an elite team. But the top line is basically carrying them. If you get to the 35 – 40 game mark and Nelson & Landeskog are still on these putrid pt paces. You’ve got big problems, big picture. And it’s more than fair to ask where do the goals come from in the bottom 6? Colton only seems to produce offense when he’s playing up in the lineup. Same in a sense with Olofsson.… Read more »

I think it is a valid discussion to have about the 3C/4C. Drury scoring pace is a bit low. Is it because of his offensive capabilities or his line mates? Bardakov has potential, but he needs to play to develop it. If the return of O’Connor pushes Bardakov back to the bench, how will he improve if he needs to play center again because of injuries? If you keep Bardakov in as 4C, but want to keep Brindley in on the 3rd line, who sits?

Jeremy

I honestly would love a world where both Brindley & Bardakov play every night. And Kiviranta is the 13th forward when they’re healthy. But I doubt that Bednar will do that. I just see way more upside with those two than Kivi in a potential postseason run. And as crazy as this sounds & it would never happen. But right now if this is all he has to give. I would sit Gabe. He has been objectively awful.

Sitting Landeskog is a valid question.

Derek

The bednar comparison to mike tomlin was great in the other thread. I think that needed more attention.

Brindley is an everyday starter no question hes active and noticable every night. I feel like its the same all the time. Too much top line/top d pair. Need to seperate mack and necas/rantanen, Need more scoring from 2nd line/2c issues. Putrid PP shooting.

The longer all these problems fester the worse its going to get…. Does sacfarland fire tomlin? I mean its cool making the playoffs but losing 1st round is not

Jeremy

It really is crazy how similar the two of them are in terms of being pretty regularly outclassed & outcoached. Both always have elite talent, but regularly underachieve. Each has won it all once. And seem to mainly keep their posts because they win a lot in the regular season & are liked a lot by their players.

Do the Avs have a depth problem again, and is Bednar burning out the MacK line already?

Derek

I dont think the depth is the problem. Its how its being deployed and used. On paper we are fairly deep. All 4 lines need to be juggled up a bit

Reece

Do you think they should purse a 3C on the trade market to reunite the Kelly Drury LOC line? That 4th line reminded me a lot of the helm cogliano LOC line of the cup run

Landy looks slow but I checked his underlying fancy stats and he’s still looking good in the corsi relativity 5-5. Are our eyes deceiving us? Is he propped up by teammates? Are we expecting 2022 Landy?

Have the avs missed Girard? Who would be a 1 for 1 trade target on Defense ie if Avs wanted to size up and trade partner wanted puck mover.

If Avs don’t play Mack and Marty in OT start, who should it be? Nelson, Nichuskin/lecky, Makar?

Ric

No matter how you swing it folks, this team is 1 game above 500… those 5 games in ot are losses!
That makes us 7 and 6 ..This team needs to be coached better..

Jean Boisjoly

Do you think that the avs should sign Wedgwood for next year to keep Nabokov in the ahl

Erik

What do you think about adding David Kampf? Looks like he is done in Toronto
