Deen’s Daily: Big Win Over the Lightning; Crazy OT Goal in Minnesota; Red Wings Big Test

Published

on

The Avalanche are back in the winning column thanks to Victor Olofsson. The Minnesota Wild won in OT off a crazy sequence involving a former Avalanche netminder. Also, the Red Wings had their first big test of the season and fell just short.

All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — November 5.

The Avalanche surrendered an early goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning but it didn’t stop them from winning in regulation.

It was the depth forwards who stepped up, with a familiar face from the last home game doing most of the scoring, yet again.

What a Wild OT Winner (heh) If you haven’t seen it yet, this is how the Minnesota Wild won in overtime last night.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before. Marcus Johansson was not only allowed to shoot the puck after the net was knocked off, but he was also able to try again on a rebound. It’s exactly how the rule is written, so nothing was called in correctly. I just don’t remember ever seeing it go in like that in OT on a second try.

Justus Annunen was in goal for the Nashville Predators. I didn’t watch the game, but I’m starting to wonder if he got some sort of warning throughout the game about knocking the net off. Crazy ending to a game that only made it to OT because Steven Stamkos scored with 0.3 seconds remaining to tie it up at 2-2.

Philly Hockey Now: One of the more entertaining games of the night, the Flyers had to win a shootout to get a second point in a game they led 3-0 early. Trevor Zegras now has the best shootout success percent in NHL history.

Montreal Hockey Now: The Habs comeback was led by Kirby Dach. That’s a player they desperately need to step up.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Arseny Gritsyuk has been a pleasant surprise for the Devils. Why he’s fitting in so well.

Detroit Hockey Now: It was a measuring stick for the Red Wings on Tuesday, taking on the Golden Knights. They only gave up one goal. But the offense came up empty.

That may have been our best 60 minutes of hockey this year. Special teams looked fantastic. Makar had some bobbling on the point on our second PP. I thought Toews and Drury played particularly well, and G-oloffson is really coming into his own.

it was nice to see Landy win a tilt and make a nice assist, despite missing two wide open nets.

Colton’s promotion is totally working.

I don’t intend this to be an argument, just find it interesting we watched the same game and reached totally different conclusions. I agree on Drury and Olofsson and I think Toews and Malinski were our better defensive pair. But I also thought the rest of the team looked pretty bad for the final two-and-a-half periods. Makar was frequently out of position and his shots and passes were off. Nichuskin looked like the slowest guy on the ice. Nelson and Lehkonen looked absent except for maybe one or two shifts each. The defense had a good stretch where they denied… Read more »

Fair comments and I certainly agree about Nelson – I think he needs to get demoted and probably traded. We out shot them in every period, won slightly more face offs and had more take aways. Not a perfect game, but I thought we had a lot of energy though I can see how if TB did not take some dumb penalties and Wedge was not excellent, it also could’ve gotten away from us.

I think you all sometimes put scoring ahead of winning. Of course we would all like to see line 2 score more. However, that line almost never gets scored on. They are winning their shifts on a consistent basis. Nelson is not invisible, he just isn’t scoring as much as we like.

I just saw that ex-Avs/Eagles player Riley Tufte is leading the AHL in points and +/-, and is second in goals scored. I did not see that coming!
