Deen’s Daily: Sleepy Avs; Panarin’s Days in NY Numbered; Chiarot Lands New Deal
The Avalanche had arguably their worst performance of the season on Wednesday. Artemi Panarin has played his last game with the New York Rangers. In Detroit, a defenseman signed an extension months before the end of the season.
All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — January 29.
Colorado Hockey Now
Colorado is truly limping its way to the Olympic break, and perhaps no performance was worse than the one they conjured up in Ottawa.
The Avalanche had 17 shots on goal. They didn’t draw a single penalty. They did not lead the entire game, and after tying it at 1-1, it took 17 seconds for them to give up the go-ahead goal.
Only four games remain before the lengthy break. Let’s see if tonight could be better.

Around The NHL
Forever Blueshirts: Artemi Panarin has played his final game for the Rangers. He’ll be held out until the Olympic break. If a trade isn’t completed by then, he’ll be held out until the trade deadline. The NHL has a trade freeze going into effect on Feb. 4, so there’s a big chance we’ll see Panarin traded before then.
You have to wonder how serious these rumors involving the Avalanche are. Panarin reportedly wants a contract extension with his new club. I’m not sure that makes sense for Colorado.
So where does that take him? Perhaps to Anaheim, and a reunion with coach Joel Quenneville. Or maybe he winds up in Detroit with old friend Patrick Kane. Maybe the Dallas Stars find a way to acquire him, using Tyler Seguin’s money (although an extension there is tough).
Montreal Hockey Now: The Habs fired their goalie coach on Wednesday.
Detroit Hockey Now: For three years, Ben Chiarot was being overplayed and miscast with the Wings. In the final year of his deal, coach Todd McLellan found a spot for him, and now he’s sticking around on an extension.
Chicago Hockey Now: Several pending UFA’s on the Blackhawks are appearing on trade boards. Is it time to sell?

Sounds like San Jose is making a push for Panarin, which would make a lot of sense for everyone. They’re surprise contenders, who could use a top six boost, have plenty of cap room now and into the future, and have a bunch of assets to entice the Rangers. Most of all, it sounds like Panarin is willing to go there and sign an extension. The Sharks definitely make way more sense for him than the Avs or Stars, but I’ll be happy if he lands literally anywhere else than Dallas.
Would you trade Necas for him?
Could be interesting if he wanted to sign under 10mil hell yeah short term.
Shane wright might be ok for a 3c project possibly hes aparently available tho idk what it would take to get him
I don’t know if the Rangers would do that. If they’re serious about rebuilding. Why would you want Necas signed at that number for the next 8 years? If I were the Avs I’d heavily consider it. Panarin in the short term might command a similar number to Necas 11.5. But he’s 34 you could sign him to a 2 maybe 3 year extension like Nelson. And then you’re free & clear. And in 3 years between him & Nelson you’d have nearly 20 million coming off the books. And presumably Mack & Makar in the later stages of their… Read more »
I think our cup window is two years max
I agree. Maybe 3.
This is the exact scenario I had imagined when I commented. He prob wants what necas is at but 10mil would be nice =)
I’d rather keep Necas.
