Former Avalanche and current Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Caleb Jones was suspended for 20 games, without pay, on Wednesday for violating the NHL performance-enhancing substances program.

The suspension is accompanied by mandatory referral to the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program for evaluation and possible treatment.

Jones issued a statement following the suspension announcement, accepting responsibility. The league said it won’t have any further comments on the matter.

Jones was a member of the Avs during the 2023-24 season. Colorado traded Cal Burke to the Carolina Hurricanes ahead of the regular season opener to bring in Jones as a No. 7 defenseman.

The now 28-year-old dressed in 25 games for the Avs, recording five assists.
