Avalanche make four more cuts, roster down to 38

The Avalanche just made four more cuts from their camp roster, with all four players being assigned to the Colorado Eagles. The players are:

Forwards Gabriel Fontaine and Jean-Luc Foudy, defenseman Andreas Englund and goalie Justus Annunen.

None of the cuts are a surprise, though it’s a bit of a disappointment for Foudy that he was a relatively early cut from camp. He’s a kid that, as my colleague Scott “Mac Daddy” MacDonald wrote last spring, got good reviews from Eagles coach Greg Cronin about his chances to make the NHL. It’ll have to wait a while still. Jared Bednar said Foudy needed to pick his game up some, and that was before last night’s game in Minnesota against the Wild.

Foudy played more than 18 minutes last night, had one shot on net and was a minus-1. So, I think we have our answer, as to how Bednar thought he played. Hey, he’s still just a kid and playing in the AHL will be good for his development. Hopefully.

Annunen figures to get a lot of playing time with the Eagles, which he needs if he is to become a regular goalie for the Avs some day soon. He seemed to play pretty well in camp.

I don’t know much about Fontaine and Englund, but they outlasted other camp hopefuls at least. Thirty-eight players remain on the camp roster, with the club needing to pare down to 23 by opening night.
