Colorado Avalanche Make First Reassignments

Published

on

The Colorado Avalanche made their first round of reassignments coming out of training camp today. Some of these were expected as the players were on AHL contracts. Only one was a surprise this morning. I had reported that Alex Galchenyuk had been absent from practice for the last two days and Jacob MacDonald had moved into his stall. The PTO release is now become official at this point and Galchenyuk is free to pursue another a contract with another team if he wishes.

There are some notable names in this list today. Defenseman and Colorado native, Nate Clurman will join in on the Colorado Eagles training camp set to start soon. Clurman spent the majority of the year in Utah with the Grizzlies of the ECHL last season. Ivan Zhigalov, who was the Avalanche’s seventh round draft pick this summer, will be going back to his junior team in Kingston. He was impressive for his short time with the club. Unfortunately, with Avalanche goalie depth chart he was slated from the beginning to rejoin his OHL squad.

Danila Zhuraylyov, who was a 2018 fifth round draft pick, is starting his first year on North American sized ice. He will need some time to adjust to the ice surface compared to what he was playing on in Russia with his KHL team. Although I did see a massive improvement in his skating and edgework from Development Camp to now, he will still need that adjustment period.

Here is the complete list of players that were reassigned, the roster now sits at 42:

We can expect more cuts in the next day or two probably. The Avalanche won’t have another preseason game for a few more days, and played the Vegas Golden Knights last night in a lopsided loss, so it’s likely we could have new cuts as early as Thursday.

The Avalanche must be down to 23 players by opening night, Oct. 13 against the Chicago Blackhawks at Ball Arena. The game is already sold out, but will be on national television. The Avalanche will play the following night in Calgary against the Flames and old friend Nazem Kadri.
