Matt Murray

Keep in mind: any notion of Matt Murray coming to the Avalanche would be for next season. Of course, you all knew that, as the NHL trade deadline happened already – about six years ago. Or so it seems.

The folks over at our sister site – Pittsburgh Hockey Nowreported recently that the Avalanche have been – and continue to be – interested in Penguins goalie Murray, the 25-year-old with two Stanley Cup rings on his fingers but who may be on the way out from Yinzer Town because of salary-cap considerations mostly. I know who their source is on this thing – and it’s a good one.

So, let’s examine whether this makes any real sense or not:

This is a tough case for me to judge here. I try not to judge goalies too much, because it’s such a tough position to play. I think whoever the Avs’ goalie is for the next few years, he’s going to have a very good team in front of him, which will make things so much easier. Yet, it’s still the most important position on a hockey team, more often than not. Great teams can overcome an average goalie. Great goalies cannot overcome an average team.

Whenever the real business of hockey resumes for the Avalanche, this storyline will start to creep closer to center stage.
