Colorado Avalanche Schedule FAQ
The NHL regular season is 82 games per team in 2025-26 and usually runs from October to mid-April. The playoffs can add up to 28 more games and can continue into June.
The Avalanche first played in 1995-96 after the franchise moved to Denver. The 2025-26 season is the 31st season in Colorado (and it is also the club’s 30th anniversary season in Denver). If you include the franchise’s Quebec Nordiques roots, the history goes back to 1972-73.
A strong contender for the best season in Avalanche history is 2000-01. Colorado finished with 118 points and won the Presidents’ Trophy for the NHL’s best regular-season record, then beat the New Jersey Devils in the Stanley Cup Final to win the championship.
In franchise history (including the Quebec Nordiques years), the worst season by record was 1989-90, when the Nordiques went 12-61-7 for 31 points.
For many fans, it is the Detroit Red Wings. That rivalry became one of the NHL’s biggest during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Another notable rival is the Minnesota Wild.
