Questions about Avs backup goaltending don’t go away after Johansson debut

Jonas Johansson

If Jonas Johansson wanted a rave review in his Avs debut, he won’t get it here. That said, he wasn’t THE main problem in the Avs’ 5-4 shootout loss to the Arizona Coyotes Tuesday night.

Let’s give Johansson a couple of compliments here: 1, he had a save on Phil Kessel on a breakaway in overtime that kept the game going. 2. He made a couple other nice saves in the game.

But, no, there was no dispelling of the season narrative that the Avalanche have a very serious problem with their backup goaltending position. It remains the soft underbelly of the team so far, with about seven weeks left before the playoffs. Avs captain Gabe Landeskog and coach Jared Bednar tried to pump the young Swede’s tires after the game, but that’s what all hockey people do 99.9% of the time.
