Two wins and one loss. Twelve goals in the final two games. For the Colorado Avalanche top prospects that participated in the Rookie Showcase in Scottsdale, Ariz., it was a very nice last couple of games in the trio of contests against Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Jose.
Avs win 7-4 today against the Sharks, overcoming a 4-2 deficit with five straight goals. Andreas Wingerli, on a short-handed goal in the third period with a little more than two minutes left, was the hero. That goal broke a 4-4 tie.
Wingerli, a 24-year-old Swede signed to a contract in the offseason, could be an early call-up kind of player for the Avs this season – and maybe there’s an outside shot he could make the club out of regular training camp (more on that below).
He’s got pro experience, though, let’s face it, “pro” experience isn’t quite on the same level in the Swedish League as it is in the NHL. Here are his stats in Sweden:

It was a bit of a struggle from the start, just a lot of new things,” Wingerli told reporters afterward. “Smaller ice, totally different hockey than in Sweden. So, it’s an adjustment. It’s a totally new system I’m going to play out there too. I felt I’m starting to get into it during the first game and during my second game today it felt way better. I can play more my game and start to get comfortable to the other things.”
Peyton Jones got the win for the Avs in net. It was nice to see Alex Beaucage score a goal in this one as well. He’s someone to keep an eye on coming up through the system. Defenseman Justin Barron capped off a good showing the tournament with two assists against the Sharks. He played all three games in tourney, while guys such as Bo Byram, Alex Newhook and Shane Bowers sat out today’s game.
