Jack Johnson

Late-breaking news: I’ve learned that Jack Johnson and the Avalanche have an agreement on a new contract for the 2021-22 season. Colorado Hockey Now first reported that the 34-year-old veteran defenseman was likely to sign a deal with the Avs after getting a professional tryout contract. Tonight, an agreement in principle was reached.

Jack Johnson will sign a one-year deal with the Avs, likely on Sunday, but it might not be announced until Monday. The money is likely to be in the $1 million range, but I don’t know the exact figure at this moment.

Johnson played in five of six preseason games, and finished up well tonight, with a plus-2 showing in Colorado’s 4-2 victory over the Dallas Stars. He played nearly 18 minutes in the contest, and he projects as either a fifth or sixth defenseman when the puck drops for real on Wednesday night against the Chicago  Blackhawks.
