Avs Grades in OT Win Over the Jets

Published

on

All I do is win, win not matter what (what)

Jack Johnson : B- – He got a few shots off and played a little over 16 minutes. With Girard coming back, it’ll be interesting to see who sits.

Bo Byram : B – He got an assist tonight and played really well in his own zone. He looked healthy and had over 18 minutes on the ice.

Erik Johnson: A – Jumped into the play at the perfect time and showed that he’s still got  it. It was his first goal since March first.

Devon Toews: B – The shot he blocked at the end looked brutal. This is the same guy who bleeding everywhere after taking an elbow to the face a few games ago and still finished the game. This is something fans will want to monitor closely.

The good news: Jared Bednar said he thought Toews was OK, though he hadn’t talked to the trainers.

Cale Makar: A+- Makar scoring a big goal is about as predictable as MacKinnon skating the puck into the offensive zone on a power play. It surprises no one.

Andrew Cogliano: C –  A minus two for the night but I thought he played well on the penalty kill.

Nicolas Aube-Kubel: B – Sometimes it’s nice for the other team to score on themselves. You gotta take what you get sometimes. His line played physical tonight.

Alex Newhook: A – He is really turning it on the last few weeks. He’s made some great passes and is playing confidently.

Logan O’Connor: C – He was another guy who was a minus two tonight. Not super impactful

Nathan MacKinnon: A – He played hard and strong tonight. He’s not just a speedy sharp shooter, but he’s not taken off the puck easily either.

J.T. Compher: C – He led the Avs in faceoff wins tonight with 10. Sometimes contribution doesn’t have to be a goal or an assist.

Josh Manson: B – Baby steps but another solid game from the defenseman. He was third on the team for TOI for the d-men with 20:33, behind Toews and Makar.

Darren Helm: C – He was a minus two with no shots on net tonight.

Atturi Lehkonen: C – He had six shot attempts and 17 minutes of ice time. He’s still finding his way but he’s making headway.

Nico Sturm: C – Looked like he almost had that goal but it went to Aube-Kubel. He still ended with an assist.

Andre Burakovsky: A+ – Snipe, snipe city! Those are the goals I want to see from Burakovsky. Taking the shot and ripping it past the goalie.

Mikko Rantanen: B – There was zero need to crosscheck the guy coming into the zone with 40 seconds left. The Avs have a knack for taking silly, costly penalties and this was one.

Pavel Francouz: B – He faced 43 shots and allowed four tonight. Not the best of stat line but he played fairly well up until the final 5 minutes. Both are hard to fault him for but nonetheless, sometimes a goalie needs to rob a guy to win a game. OT wins are no guarantee for this team.

EJ got caught pinching leading to a 2 on 1 and Peg’s 1st goal. Also, was it just me or did Manson look really slow in this game and struggled a bit on getting the puck out of the defensive zone?

I’d like to maybe see Towes sit a game, even if it’s super minor. Even other guys too. No one wants to sit, but it’s time to look to the playoffs and making sure everyone stays in top shape.

Bednar is a nice guy and coach, but he really rides his top lines wayyyyyy too much.

Pretty much agree with every one of those grades, Kelsey. This could have been the best two-way game I ever saw from Burakovsky. He is normally a hazard in the d-zone, but last night he made some great defensive plays.

The only grade I disagree with is on JTC. I thought he had a really good game.

Agreed, Svien

Nice write-up, Kelsey, Kudos to the Pegs for fighting for their life. The team that cared more about points was easy to spot, though the Avs played well enough for 2. I like seeing the coaches experiment with different line configurations during these dog days–Lehkonen here and there, Byram here and there. Manson often looks like a faster, more nimble MacDermid. I, for one, am on board this beefier roster for playoff success, but the clumsy hands and “just chip it out” feel like a bygone era for this high-skill team. Why can’t Girard and Manson be one player? Best… Read more »

LOL! Like Byram but his bad pass out of the Jets zone led to a goal. Hmmm

What a near choke job. MacTurnover sucked on the powerplay. He had three easy o-zone saves and he blew it. And his defense is a joke. And not being able to close the game with an EN was indicative of his real talent.

Overrated, pouter. Makes me MacPuke!
