The Colorado Avalanche have been dealt a lot of tough blows on the injury front this season.

Tonight, they appear set to get a huge piece back.

On Saturday morning, the Avalanche activated Nathan MacKinnon off injured reserve. In a corresponding move, they demoted forward Charles Hudon.

All of this likely sets the stage for MacKinnon’s return on New Year’s Eve against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Avalanche are not holding a morning skate due to the earlier than normal start time of the game, so official word will not come until later, but the moves of the morning make MacKinnon’s return probable.

Before his injury, MacKinnon had amassed 36 points in only 23 games. His return would be a massive boost to a depleted forward group.
