Avalanche Turning Point: 30 Seconds of End-to-End Action (+)
In the Turning Point, we’ll take a look at one moment in the previous Colorado Avalanche game that changed the momentum of the game.
The third was the most even period in the Avalanche/Predators matchup on Friday night, and it also created some chaotic end-to-end action. The Predators had nothing to play for, and sent the house on a late rush. That gave MacKinnon and company and opening.
End-to-End
Girard does a nice job of chipping the puck up to Byram after a blocked shot, and the “Hot Rod” just takes off. They execute a 3-on-2 pretty well, but the pass across to Newhook from MacKinnon just jumps over his stick. It’s compounded by Newhook losing an edge, and the Predators turn the puck the other way.
Girard and Rantanen are the two skaters back covering the rush. Byram, who is clearly gassed, gives everything he has to get back, and Newhook actually does a great job hustling on the back check. Byram’s hustle eliminates one option, and Newhook’s work forces the puck carrier to make a bad pass. This is where the lack of talent the Avalanche were playing against comes into play, as a more talented, veteran player probably makes a better play there.
The puck goes right to Rantanen, and the two stars are off to the races. MacKinnon gives Rantanen a look, but I don’t think he seriously considered passing it at any point. He lets a shot go from the inside of the circle, and it’s game over. Lankinen never had a chance.
The Avalanche had to squeak out some wins in the final two weeks where they weren’t at their best, but game-breaking talent like MacKinnon could be the difference for them in the postseason.
