Avalanche Wrap-Up: Comparables For a Toews Extension, Ranta Leaves For Sweden

Avalanche Toews

Another quiet week for the Colorado Avalanche, as teams typically stay quiet while the NHL playoffs get wrapped up. There was a small bit of news, as a former third round pick left for Sweden.

With nothing really happening, we took a look at what it might cost if the Avalanche want to re-sign Evan Rodrigues and Devon Toews.

Here’s a look back at what you might have missed, as well as a look ahead at what’s coming at CHN this week.

Monday

Patrick Roy won a QMJHL Championship, and his team is currently playing in the Memorial Cup. Is the NHL next?

Picked up for cheap last summer, Evan Rodrigues finds himself staring down free agency once again. What would it cost for the Avalanche to re-sign him?

J.T. Compher hit career highs in most statistical categories, but struggled down the stretch and in the playoffs.

The World Championships had a lot of reminders of the truly dark years for the Colorado Avalanche.

Tuesday

Is there an 84 game season coming?

Another mailbag, where people ask if Colorado should pursue Kyle Dubas, if Chris MacFarland is safe, and if Corey Perry is something they should pursue in free agency.

The NHL draft is about a month away, so a quick roundup of mock drafts.

Wednesday

Free agency projections are out, and some of them are a little ridiculous.

Part one of the three part Nikolai Kovalenko film room series came out, focusing on his physicality. Parts two and three will be out this week.

Ball Arena was somehow ranked the best arena in the NHL for fans.

Thursday

Devon Toews is eligible for a contract extension on July 1. Taking a look at some previous UFA contracts for defensemen, what might it cost to retain him?

Colorado’s summer checklist now has one less item on it, as restricted free agent Sampo Ranta signed a two-year deal in Sweden. The Avalanche can still qualify him to retain his rights.

Friday

Taking a look back at Joe Sakic‘s five best trades as the GM.

Colorado should only bring back one of Erik Johnson or Jack Johnson, but which one should it be? Or is the answer really that neither of them should be brought back?

Saturday

Some thoughts on somebody I’ve heard is a real dark horse to make the team come October, and the struggles Colorado has had drafting outside of the top 10.

Sunday

Mikko Rantanen scored 62 goals in 89 games in 2022-23, and there’s a good argument to be made that he was the teams MVP.

A Look Ahead to Next Week

  • Season in Review series continues
  • Ondrej Pavel film room (+)
  • Parts two and three of the Nikolai Kovalenko film room series.
  • A look at a potential J.T. Compher contract, and if it really is out of their price range.
  • A look ahead to the NHL Draft
  • Maybe…more news?
